Also, you may want to check the exact nature of the sex offense in some cases. Virginia also registers statutory rape as a sex offense--but that can also be a 20 yr old with a 16 yr old girlfriend, as is the case with the now 47 yr old father of a one of my DS's friends. (Imagine my shock when I saw him come up...but I digress).

Anyway, McLean is very nice, great schools, nice neighborhoods. You'll have sticker shock for sure coming here from Portland.

People may have their complaints about McLean/Vienna, but child safety and sex offenders are definitely not on the list.

Town of vienna has the crime listings on their web site. If you are worried about this area, look at Washington Post Humorist Gene Weingarten's column about the police log in Vienna: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/gene-weingarten-soft-boiled-detectives/2012/01/10/gIQA1niuSQ_story.html

There are weekly crime listings in the sun gazette newspaper for each town which you can get online

Both Vienna and McLean are very safe. Of course you have to do your due diligence, as with everything else. But no, you do not need to be staring down everyone in the playground, worrying that they are a sexual predator. Check out the crime stats. They are both fairly low.

Vienna was rated among the top 5 towns having the largest gain in real estate values during this past recession. http://realestate.yahoo.com/promo/americas-best-and-worst-housing-markets-2011.html
Another town not mentioned is Falls Church City which is also very cute and not too far away. They have their own highly rated school system. The homes west of Tysons around Colvin Run such as in Shouse Village are also very nice and feed into McLean district schools even though most homes have a Vienna address.

Agree with this, other than the observation about the traffic. The traffic in Vienna along Maple Avenue/Route 123 can be a lot worse than the traffic in McLean, particularly on the evenings and weekends. The retail areas in McLean are a bit more dispersed, and the traffic is lighter.

To be clear, Vienna and McLean, unlike the City of Falls Church, do not have their own school systems. Children living in both places attend Fairfax County schools. You have to check the specific address to find out the school assignment. The only easy rule of thumb that holds true is that students who live in the Town of Vienna are assigned to Madison HS. You could live in a house with a Vienna address and possibly attend middle or high schools in Falls Church, McLean, Reston or Vienna, or live in a house with a McLean address and possibly attend middle or high schools in Falls Church, McLean or Vienna. Students who live in the Shouse Village neighborhood in Vienna attend an elementary school in Vienna, a middle school in Falls Church and a high school in McLean.

McLean and Tysons Corner are huge hubs of employment and companies. With all of the little businesses nearby (restaurants, shopping, etc.) they require plenty of blue collar tasks also. Some of these are offender's places of employment. These appear in the search.

Translation: Town of Vienna has its own police department, but little crime, so the force spends its time handing out traffic tickets and patrolling speed traps.

Our neighborhood has a lot of home businesses by entrepreneurials and offenders who work for them have their address associated with the home address of the business owner.

Oh to add you could let the owner know because he might not know about the offense if it happened after they hired the scum bag
