The rates differ by school, but they're all in the same ballpark. Ours is $327 for after care and something like $134 for morning care. Because our school starts so early (by 8:15), most people don't use morning care - we don't. The cost varies by your income bracket, but the highest bracket something like $85K and up, which is lower than the average HHI in Arlington.

You can use extended day for as many or as few days as you want, but there's no reduction in fees for using it less than 5 days a week. My daughter rides the bus home on days when I'm teleworking, so she doesn't use it every day.

This thread except the last 3 posts is over 4 years old, so I would assume all of the previous $$ quoted have gone up.

We're at the top of the sliding scale and our elementary is $327 for after care and around $134 for morning care. School starts on the early side and our bus comes at 7:50 so we don't use morning care. You can pay for just one or the other or both. It's a good deal. Even if you don't use it every day or for the full 2-3 hours, you might enjoy the flexibility for work, workouts, grocery shopping, etc.

And no, that isn't the bottom of the sliding scale. That's the highest rate. Some people pay half that.

Then you'd be really shocked at what we pay in City of Alexandria. They just raised the prices -- now it's $429 for the year. Based on the 183 day calendar, that comes to less than $2.50 per day.

Much less than that, actually, since our program includes all the days off as well, not just the days they have school. So if you factor those in, it's probably closer to $2/day.

You can absolutely sign up for Extended Day and pay the full amount, even if you only plan on using a couple of times a week. Presumably you would tell the Extended Day staff, however, of your schedule because (at least at our school) they have a very organized system for collecting all the kids at the end of the day, knowing what activities they are going to, etc. If money is not an issue for you, then that would probably be the easiest way to get the flexible care you need.

$5 per day times an average 22 school days per month equals $110 per month - nowhere near $200.

The default assumption is that your kid will come every day, but setting up a different schedule, or varying from the alternative schedule, is no big deal. We send a letter at the beginning of the year telling the extended day staff which days our kids will be coming. There's a form at sign-in if you need to change what you're doing that day (bus/pick-up/home with someone else/extended day even though it's not a day they usually go).

I really love the extended day staff, and I'm irritated that you're talking about "getting them to understand" whether your kid is going to be there. It sounds really, really patronizing.

I know your post says that. My question was if people can use it 2-3 days a week or if it is expected/assumed that kids come every day. I just wonder if it is a pain to just use it part time as far as getting them to understand which days your child will come, signing them out, etc. My son is in 1st now and we have a nanny so it is not an issue, but at some point we may get rid of the nanny and use extended day in the afternoons 2-3 days a week.

This is only true in a very small number of school's in DC. We pay over $400/month.
