There are some around "these parts" who seem to imply that prepping kids for tests is unethical.

Additionally, it seems that there are some who believe that having kids "work" is somehow mentally/emotionally damaging and that Tiger parents are somehow abusing their children.

Not sure why they get all up in arms about what other families are doing. I suppose maybe they think that these families are stealing their AAP spots???

I guess those with George Hugely V parental styles are the ones making all the fuss. The approach of the poster above seems a disruptive paradigm for many here. But, no one is advocating you change and the poster doesn't plan to alter style because so-called "laissez faire" "life lovers" demand so.

We, on the other hand, prep because we were prepped by our parents and we love our children. We don't care what others do with their own children. In our household, discipline, hard work and honesty is rewarded. We do not have TV (most families I think do...but so what?) because, on balance, we believe this has a negative influence on developing young children.

If my children decide to use this device (TV) when they can vote and drive a car I have no objections at that point. However, there are much better things to do with life until then. This is our opinion. It is not shaped by other parents or other children. This works well in our household. We do not disparage others you have a differing opinion or view recognising we are neither clones nor robots.

Children doing homework (academic, intellectual, creative and athletic) in our house is just fine. And they are held accountable. No revolts planned here the kids enjoy these activities.

we prep because so many other people are doing it. Kind of like an arms race really. Not my rules, but I will play the game unless DC utterly rebels and it becomes clear it is doing more harm than good. So far, this hasn't happened.

Your lofty standard describes the "life-loving" and "youth-enjoying" George Hugely V. Many of us are not interested in raising George Hugely V clones. I'll take the smart egg head and I am not even sad or going nuts about this. I would be delighted with the latter result.

I understand the bar is so low for this standard the growing epidemic of smart and gifted children in NOVA don't even prep for this!

Much of success on our earth is a result of hard work (drill, kill, preparation, prep, or whatever you want to call an early riser) and not predestination or luck. Chance favors the prepared mind (and body). This explains the success of the children of Tiger mothers (e.g., Jeremy Lin) and the failures of the entitled class (e.g., George Hugely V). You don't have to subscribe to holding your very young children accountable with discipline and intellectual and academic pursuits in favor of fun, play, lacrosse, travelling to Europe and wine with dinner; but when your smart and gifted children don't quite make 3 score and 10 on this earth ("can't compete") please don't cry foul because their peers "cheated" by preparing themselves and doing homework (on the court or in the library) instead of watching TV and playing video games under the nanny's watchful eyes. Such whining smacks of sour grapes.
