Vinyl windows are less prone to leaks vs. wood

We replaced eight windows with Clera windows and found it very reasonable. Also the quality is much better than the windows we used before.

I am having a Anderson salesperson come to my house for an estimate on 2 large windows and a sliding glass door. Do they usually give you a higher estimate then if you were to go to a home improvement store?

I'm surprised to read that. I had quite the opposite from Power Home Remodeling Group. Nice guys through my whole experience with them. We did 15 windows and my basement door for around $17,500. It was worth every penny. Someone tried to break in a few months back and he couldn't get through the door with a crowbar. My neighbor saw the guy and called the police. That door saved me a lot of trouble. On top of that the bills really went down even with the crazy hot summer. I feel like I got a good deal from a good company.

Ooh - this is good to know! I'm not OP but we also need to replace 9 windows on our rowhouse and they are one of the companies we called for an estimate.

OP - my suggestion is get on Angie's List. It will really help you get a sense of the price, the process, a company's customer service record, etc. PP's quoting random figures like "$300/window" are not telling you the whole story. You have to pay for the window itself but you have to consider installation. If you need any reframing done that will be even more. I've seen a range of prices on Angie's List that runs from about $5-8K for the number of windows you and I need depending upon the installation requirements.

Just surprised how much they are charging per window and how much everybody is paying. It's not that difficult to replace a window if you have some basic knowledge of fixing house stuffs, first timer for the first window will probably take you about 3-4 hours, after that 2 hours per window. Unless you are making $50 per hour, I wouldn't pay somebody to do it or if you don't know how to, there's nothing you can say. We know how to do it, but we ended up paying the crew that was working on our house already, $90 each no warranty.

Some commen sense and YouTube videos will save you tones of money. Good luck

Willis Builders out of Potomac. They have been great. They do everything, not just windows.

It's a good idea to get a few estimates and even check with local contractors so you can compare and decide upon the windows that suit your style and budget. We got brand new double-hung replacement windows from Champion Window last month. We really like the windows and the way the job was handled. Call them over for an in-home estimate. They'll send their guys over at no charge.

Make sure that when you get multiple bids that you compare similar products. There is a huge difference in quality and price between vinyl, fiberglass and wood clad windows. I'm an architect, and from my experience, you get what you pay for. If you only want to spend $300 or less per window, that will put you into a cheap vinyl window and the seals might leak in 5 years. Wood clad windows and even many of the fiberglass replacements out there (ie Anderson Replacements) will cost more but are far better quality than vinyl.

We used NOVA Installations and while I can't remember the exact price, I do know that they were way less than some other estimates we got.

I think it is worthwhile to get a number of estimates. I couldn't believe the way some of the salepeople approached it. We had one guy out to the house who quoted us a crazy high price and then kept piling discount upon discount until he was acting like he was giving us SUCH a great deal. In fact, his bid was still higher than the one we eventually got from NOVA Installations and they were much easier to work with.

We got 9 windows from Renewal by Anderson for about $900 per window, which included enlarging three of the window openings in our brick rambler.

We are currently updating the garden apartment on the ground floor of our house with all new windows -- 10 of them -- w/ 'security glass' (the kind you can't break through with a baseball bat, but looks like a normal replacement vinyl window). They are $300-400 each for the windows depending on size. With labor it totals to just under $5500.

+1 on Windows on Washington. Had them install 11 double hungs with a very high quality window for about $7800. Very pleased with the window and installation. No high pressure sales tactics.
