Yep, all Catholics should not be allowed access to contraception. This is where this debate should start. The government should step up and help the church. How do we get this into law. What should be the penalties for breaking this law? I say jail time for doctors- 5 years min., heavy fine for the pharmaceutical companies- 100k for each pill, women 5 years min., husband - nothing(they don't know anything about this stuff) priest if they harbor these criminals- 10 years and heavy fine against the church. Oh, we should add a rewards of a few $$ to rat people out.

How is the Government "prohibiting the free excise thereof"? Catholic institution like hospital, supply contraception to employees and patients. Catholic women use contraception.

Since when is a hospital or a university a "religious institution"?

I got my MSW at Catholic, which specifically exempts the School of Social Justice (the social work program) from Catholic doctrine because, they're incompatible on a significant number of key points, like GLBT and women's rights. Catholic couldn't offer an "MSW" if they insisted the school teach according to doctrine -- they wouldn't get accredited.

So the church bends when it wants to.

get over yourself. The basic principle was resolved a long time ago when the LDS church practiced polygamy as an important part of their religion. The government cannot dictate internal religious doctrine but it can sure make you comply with neutral laws of general applicability.
