This is not a DIL issue, this is a "you are married to a spineless @#@##@ issue". Unless you live in a country where women are subjugated by law, but I am guessing that you do not since you are on DCUM. They you are responsible for your situation.

Who cares about your ILs expectations you are not married to them. My MIL would never be so bold as to make a any demands on my role as wife, mother, career person. The few times that she tried (insisting that I personally bathe my 6yo or suggesting that I supplementing with formula), I calmly explained to her that I would not be taking her advice and that was the end of that argument.

This is one of the more peculiar posts I've seen. Agree with PP that you are trying to project your issues onto society. And your title seems to be the opposite of your complaint. In my experience the older generation prefers that women stay home and rear children. My MIL could never understand why I had a career. Same is true for a lot of people in that generation because that is the way they were brought up. I would have been happy to have ILs who were more ambitious. But really you just need to decide what is right for you and move on with your life. Unless you are living with them or they are supporting your family I don't see how it is otherwise their business.
