What confuses me is why my fed govt office doesn't supply dish soap in the kitchens. And why my fed govt gym in my building (that I pay to use) doesn't supply towels. I would pay more for towels.

I always order tissues when our office manager takes office supply orders. I used to bring my own, but got sick of providing tissues for all my co-workers...it's hard to say no when a guy with a runny nose asks to "borrow" a tissue.

I have lots of plastic things at my house that I wash and reuse. Food storage containers, sippy cups, other kid cups, spatulas, the list goes on and on. WTF is wrong with washing and reusing plastic utensils?

I work for the Fed. Gov.
Right on. My nose needs Puffs. My co-irkers try to use my Puffs instead of the work issued ones. No, you want Puffs buy your own.
They dont provide plastic spoons, forks, knives. There is a big drawer in the kitchen of old/used utensils. If you use them you wash them out in the kitchen area and place them back in the drawer. DISGUSTING. I saw that the first day and I promptly went down to the Walmart and bought some in bulk and keep them in my desk. I bring my own utensils. Yes...there are people that actually use the used utensils, wash them and place them back in the drawer.

What is disgusting about washing utensils. You do realize that most households and cafeterias do this as well?

Defense?

I work for a contractor and we can barely buy filing supplies.

I have seen tissues provided in a couple places I have worked. Where I work now even springs for a nice name brand and keeps a large stash in the supply closet! It is not a big deal but it is nice when you have a cold to not have to worry about bringing tissues to your work.

20 years of working private and local govt'. NO tissues, never heard of it.
Buy some tissues if you want them at your desk. What is the big deal. BTW, there were never tissues in the bathroom either.

work in a hospital and we have them - but they really aren't for staff use (though I have used them in an emergency when my personal box ran out.)

Never in any office where I've worked (private, government).

We couldn't get pens let alone Kleenex.

I once worked at a government contractor that provided not only tissues, but free tampons in the bathrooms! And they provided free soda and popcorn (ostensibly as an incentive to work late).

they do not. Large, well-regarded, top 50 to work for company around here.

they also don't provide tea, just coffee in the kitchen, which bugged me when I first started. My old company used to at least provide lipton.

that said, clearly not a deal-breaker, and in fact, one example of probably why they are so good at business/cost-management.

Incidentally, AOL used to provide everything like that, and I HATED working there, so look how well that's going for them.

We have them and I work in a small private company that is incredibly cheap on everything. I guess I'll have to keep the free tissues in mind when I complain about how we get almost no holidays off, only get raises if we take on extra work from someone who has left, get nothing for dependent health insurance, etc. All the money is going to name brand (Kleenex) tissues! The boss has allergies. It's all making sense now.

Both of the employers I have worked for (public and private sector) have provided tissue boxes for individual offices. Not good tissues, but tissues, nonetheless.
