Yes, for bright students, both Arlington and Fairfax are great school options. But for SOME kids -- far beyond K students reading at a 2nd grade level -- AAP Centers are better options. I have three kids, and two of them are in this "SOME kids" category. AAP is better for them. And no, I have not coached or prodded or fought with the school for a designation.

I am a product of FFX county public schools, btw. My education was nothing like my kids are receiving in Arlington. It takes a lot to impress me--and I'm blown away by their elementary school.

I am horrified reading these posts from the FFx parents pushing and pressuring their K and 1st graders. Yuck. They make 'Tiger Mom' look like a hippy, home-schooler. Talk about pushing out all degree of creativity from a kid.

I have one word for all of you people: QUOTA. If your kid plans to attend UVA, W&M, etc...it can be a complete disadvantage to be at one of the perceived top schools. They do have a quota of kids they will take per NOVA school. I was told this at the time of my application and it has been confirmed by an Admissions employee. Kids can get a solid education at a good APS or FFX school--it does not have to be one of these centers.

You do make a strong case against the Fairfax schools, but not for the reasons stated. One more Arlington mom saying "my schools are the bestest" won't change Fairfax's superior track record.

I wonder why the Sec of Education chose Arlington County over Fairfax?

This is true! Only SOME kids need to be at an AAP Center. "Regular kids" can (and will) do fine in either Arlington or Fairfax schools. For those "SOME" kids that need to be at an AAP Center, Fairfax is a better option.

Well, according to the links you provide, FFX and APS systems both fail to meet AYP, so there's that parity. By that definition they both are failing schools.

AYP is generally understood to be a poor metric.

APS failed to make AYP in more categories than FFX. It might have done better if it had followed Fairfax's lead with more differentiated programs and assistance.

Got it. APS is superior because it has the highest percentage of anal parents.

Glad to know we can forget about AYP, student test scores and all that irrelevant stuff.

OP, you should note that there will be changes in the AAP system by the time your little girl actually starts school. As an example, there are plans to pilot a change in the materials for general education in part of cluster 1, where portions of the curriculum previously only available to AAP students would be included in the general ed classes as well. Therefore, by the time you are considering options for grades 2, 3, etc., you will likely see changed AAP and general ed options.

Well, you're getting some insight into the attitudes that prevail here. Welcome!

Of.26.kids in my child's second grade class last year, 16 are now in a Local Level IV classroom (we have 2 out of 5 third classes as LLIV (no center eligible students chose the center this year). Some of them are center eligible, the rest were placed in LLIV by the principal to fill out the classes. So, you face the county process and also local principal politics in this program. Imagine how the 10 kids who ended up in gen ed feel about their intelligence.
