I am with you OP I feel like I am so not in control of my life. DH made some terrible decisions and now we may have to move out of the area. I feel like my life is falling apart, except this time it's not my fault. Right before this all went down I was the happiest I had ever been

We rent and dc is beginning kindergarten in the Fall. We moved to DC and had no idea where we wanted to live and knew no one to give us advice on neighborhoods. I didn't even know about DCUM, gasp!! Now we have been here three years, I feel like I can make an informed decision. Renting is under rated these days!

OMG, I could have posted this! I feel your anguish, truly I do. DS slated to start K in a few months, don't know if our mortgage will go through, if it doesn't, we don't want to rent where we currently live anymore, so we'd have to find another rental, blah blah, it's awful not knowing or having that basic stability that makes life so much easier.

I can solve at least one of these issues for you: RENT, don't buy. Explore your new city for a couple of years. You can buy then.

This. Also, since you will be renting, as long as the K is decent, you can worry about finding the perfect school pyramid later.
I would add that K really isn't that important. It's mostly play based and not likely to have much of an impact on your child's long term educational success (as long as you're involved, read to him, etc.). So, stop worrying about K. Rent don't buy.
