-Sent me the book "The Starter Marriage" right after we got engaged. She's never liked me, and we've been married 9 years now.

There are so many other things. We don't have any kind of relationship at all, and I think of her as a distant cousin.

My MIL gasped in horror when my husband announced we were expecting our first baby (we were both in our early thirties), responded only with "WHEN?!?", and then visibly did the math in her head to determine whether I'd been pregnant at the wedding.

Oh, and when he years later announced we were moving to my home state, she declared "that's been her (my) plan since the beginning." Yes, MIL, it's a diabolical husband recruiting scheme. We're programmed to live in Other Location for years, develop a career and social circle there, find an unwitting husband, buy a home, have a child, and then BOOM - bring them back to The Motherland.

Hated me for my skin color (white) and never spoke to her son again after he told her he was with me. Now we have a child she's never seen (but does know about). I think she sucks.

Left our 6 month old on changing table, left the room, baby rolled off table and hit hard wood floor, bloody nose everywhere, and she never told us about it and denied it to our faces after we confronted her (our three year old ran into our room in the morning, and told us the story in very graphic detail.) We also found bloody washcloths in the trash can. We went right to the ped, and luckily the baby was fine, but should have been monitored over night, as the fall was over three feet.

She has never admitetd this. We did nots speak to her for six months. Then slowly, we let them back in, but I have never forgiven her. I never wanted to leave them in her care again, but DH fought hard for occasional visits a couple times a year, now that they are 4 and 6 and can tell us what happens. She still lies about random things (what they ate, what time they went to bed) but I do give in and allow the free babysitting a couple of times a year.
Still, I have never forgiven her for lying and never will.

This wasn't said about me, but she called my Peruvian SIL a c*nt b/c SIL wanted to return home to Peru for Christmas for the first time in 5 years instead of going to visit MIL. SIL and BIL see my MIL at least three times a year, but apparently SIL somehow offended MIL with her desire to see her family and home country.

The worse thing my mother in law did:

spoiled the shit out of her son (my husband) and now I have a 32 year old brat to deal with.

Besides that, she is like a mom to me and is always spoiling me with gifts, money, attention...she is truly a sweetie!

THIS! I can't add anything to this. She got into a big fight with my mother at our wedding reception, she criticizes everything we do, she ignores her grandchildren, and she wonders why spend almost no time with her.

Called my child "socially retarded." A ten month old. Who is totally normal... Just doesn't like granny.

Cried at a Seder at our house because her daughter didn't marry a Jewish man. She married me instead (a non-Jewish man).

Wow, you really should not be complaining about this!

My MIL's sins are mostly those of omission, not commission, so I'm fortunate. But she said she couldn't skype on DS's first birthday because the times when he wouldn't be napping interfered with her meditation and nap time she needed to destress from her hectic life. She doesn't even work! Not that DS cares, but she is pretty selfish. DS is almost two. She has enough money and more than enough time, and she has never bothered to visit.

Seriously! My mother "scheduled" her own father's funeral on her birthday. I have never once heard her mention it and that was 20 years ago. You need to get over it.

I know, i had the same reaction.

Put up a shrine to the girl she would have preferred her son marry, memorialized said person in wedding memorabilia for her other child's wedding, continued to include said person on mass family emailings and when DH brought it to her attention that I might find this offensive, claimed it all slipped her mind and, 9 years later, never passes up the opportunity to remind me how grateful she is that DH married me as he would not have felt the challenge if had married old girlfriend. I could go on, but I won't.
