Eastern has went through all the racial transformations over the decades. It was all white, then became integrated and by choice the whites left and the school became all black.

Now the neighborhood has changed but the school racial mix hasn't. Plainly put because the school boundary portion for Eastern serves a large black population.

It was poised on another thread but until the whites come up with a number of what they consider a comfortable population of blacks who can make the school a postive racial mix, Eastern will never cut the mustard.

Projected enrollment for Eastern next year is about 500 plus and the percentage of whites expected to attend is almost non-existent. I must say that Eastern is pulling out all the bells and whistles to recurit that white minority student population but y'all too skeptical for that ain't ya???

I say if 500 black students are already destined for Eastern next year then let the 501[st] be the white kid from the neighborhood. If he/she is chased home, then they don't have far to run, do ya??? Let's be political correct the white child being chased home is not of negative harmful issues but because of the novelty and popularity of the recent status of being the 501[st] child. We all know how how black children are fanatical when it comes to things that are white. Remember the white doll-baby experiement?

Hold on, the responses from the Hill base that will write and post that their child[ren] have plenty of black school-aged friends will be mind-boggling. The DCUM sytem is about to be overloaded with the Peter, Paul and Mary's who are close friends with the neighborhood Beyonce', Jaz-Z and Lil Wayne. And through this collaboration, nothing can go wrong.

Hold on, let me go to the store and get a box of wine and some rolling papers, so I can be prepared to read the chatter.

well, in order to see us, you'll need to hang on until 2018 for most of us. i don't think it's unreasonable to see the turn-around by then. the elementary schools have done it beautifully. it's the same families. i see no reason for middle school to be much different.

Okey doke. Keep telling yourself that and get back to us in a few years

the problem I've seen in a lower tier elementary is one by one families decide to apply out. And one by one, students get in to Ward 3 OOB, charter, etc., and peel off from the cohort. It is very hard to keep a group together if the destination school is not already of the standard that the parents want.

I'd think it would be possible if the destination school were Stuart Hobson, which is pretty good, but even there, students peel off in 4th for 5th at Latin & Basis. Holding it together for Eliot Hine, tough tough tough. Just wait.

yup. i recognize who that poster is as well. and she knows her stuff b/c she's a committed Hill parent. there are MANY of us who are supporting E-H now and looking forward to it becoming a our middle school, in spite of all the negativity you read at DCUM.

Can't help but think that there are some sour grapes about this whole complex sprouting to become something bigger. It may (understandably) be reminiscent of segregated times long gone, when neighborhood folks had to board trolleys to faraway places because Eastern was a segregated white school. But, with all due respect, please, can we come together?!

I don't understand what you are talking about. There a large number of white and black neighbors who want this school to work.

Now my last newsletter from Eastern showcased only ONE child who had the HIGHEST honors out of the entire inauguration freshmen class. I am readily assured that student who achieved such a lofty goal was a former 8th grader from Caesar Chavez. I am not gossipying that former E-H students are not doing their best at Eastern. But I know for a fact that many of Eastern's current discipline problems were attributed to those students who were promoted from E-H.

Furthermore, you don't want it. Slow your roll and stay in your lane.

Yargle bargle?

I just want to respond to the post about highest honors at Eastern their system for awarding highest honors is skewed. True the young lady had straight As and she is a wonderful student and person. But the only students with straight A's were recognized as having highest honors which does not equate with the gpa requirements for summa cum laude. There was another student who received a 4.00 who had a B in a weighted Honors English class as she was not recognized (She attended a Kipp school 8th grade). But at the end of the day these were the only two students that had grades even worthy of being spoken of in the general education program. Almost 80% of the inaugural class has less than a 2.00. The students that attended E-H Jefferson and S-H that were of higher quality academically chose schools other than Eastern to attend this year.
