Really none of the logic of the OP makes sense. Everyone makes "choices" so where do you draw the line? OP says divorce is a choice undeserving of FA even if family had been established full pay for a long time. What if one parent is killed - say they are a cop or secret service? Or what if they drove at night and a drunk driver hit them? By this logic they chose their profession or chose to drive at a time with more drunks on the road, so their kids should just suck it up and deal with switching schools while grieving, right? Or how about the child of a teacher at the school? Shouldn't have decided to teach OP's kid if you wanted the same education for your own child, huh? How about a "disadvantaged minority" being raised by a single mom? Guess she should have picked a richer dad if she wanted private school, right OP? I think OP must be a troll, but it's kind of a sad thing that I'm not 100% sure.

So, if a single mother is raising three children, as long as she was divorced before she applied for school, she should have a chance of getting FA, but not if she divorced while they are in school? Because a lot of children who get financial aid are more than just disadvantaged minorities (and to put it bluntly, Asian minority children tend to come from the highest average income households). It is much more expensive to maintain two households that it is to maintain one household, so even on the same HHI, once that household is split, both households will make sacrifices and have to lower their standard of living.

Private school parent here. My car (not SUV) is 10 yrs old. I don't have $300K HHI, a flat screen TV, and have never been to Europe or a fancy little island on vacation. I also don't receive FA. OP, thank you and your ilk for counting my money and for telling me what my lifestyle is as a "private school parent". It's a riot. I'm also not divorced and have no plans to be, but if it happened, and I had huge lawyers bills to pay, I can assure you there'd be no way I could ever afford to keep our DCs in private school. If you could do it on half your income, less lawyers' fees, more power to you. I suggest you stop counting others' money and stop being so nasty.

The OP is more than a mean spirited. Also, she's so focused on the parents she leaves out the impact of the divorce on the kid. The kid faces so much, change, tension and sadness in his or her life, if there is a way to preserve continuity in the kids life, a school community should take steps to help the kid. What if a suddenly parent dies? Wouldn't you want the kid to stay in the school or are you going to blast that family for sucking up resources too?

I find it hard to believe that even when divorced, they can't find the money to pay the tuition. maybe the homes are too big and i'm sure the cable bill is paid. the smart phone, the blue ray, the suv, the botox, ....please, if they were in private school to begin with the money is there...they just don't want to pay it.

"give it to a financially deserving minority" LOL....and OP seems to be full of prejudice too ( that is a form of hate also, right) FYI, OP: at my DC's school the "minorities" are diplomats, cabinet members, under- writers of the bulk of the capital campaign. It is true their skin is brown, but what does that have to do with HHI $$$$ ?

Bitter, much ? Actually schools are filled with 5, 6, 7, and 8 year olds not, "parents who need to get off their high horse" . Honestly, would you say the same if a child's mother or father died ? " So , your Dad is dead...get off your high horse". Not a divorced parent here( SMBC), but geez can the 7 year old child with the splitting up family just stay at their school for rest of year or two ? Or is it absolutely necessary that the 7 year old lose their school, their friends , their home and the presence of one parent all in the same month ?

I am glad that schools do this. Why should a child suffer because his/her parents can't resolve their issues? I have small kids and could pay for privates on my owns salary, if DH divorced me. I don't understand the hatred of FA families on this site. My suggestion is you should MYOB or get on the financial board that makes decisions.

OP, I am stunned that a human being can be so ugly.

I'm headed towards divorce - a divorce that NO ONE could have predicted or prevented. I never wanted to be divorced, and I never, ever wanted my children to be part of a divorced home. It breaks my heart every single day, and I literally have trouble getting out of bed in the morning because I am so sad for my THREE little children. But I get up and I do anything and everything I can do to make their lives better, including sending them to their private school where everyone knows their name and cares for them.

How much longer can I do it? I don't know. Have I applied for financial aid? No. Luckily my husband's family has stepped up and will pay tuition. Therefore my children can continue at their school, and they will have some much-needed stability, structure, and love in their lives.

If I was in different situations, I would do ANYTHING to keep my kids in their school, including applying for FA.

OP, you have written one of the meanest and ugliest posts I've ever seen on DCUM. I hope YOUR husband doesn't divorce you someday. Take it from me, it can happen in the blink of an eye, and your life will be destroyed.

You're a bitch, and I would hate to have my little children anywhere near you. Go ahead and stop contributing to your fund. I'm sure you'll have even LESS friends than you have now.

We don't receive FA and I pray that we'll never be in a position where we'd need to apply. However, I'd much rather see FA going to an existing student to keep that student in the same school than a new student who hasn't yet started the school. I think it's terribly sad when a child has to leave a school because the parents can no longer afford it. Whatever happened, it's not the child's fault!
