OP, can you just order a new dishwasher and have it installed without telling him? He probably won't notice.

Please don't make me google it for you and your not so manly husband. It is possible for them to have a receptical and when you are being sold a DW, the sales person will try to sell you a conversion kit. Most installers don't bother with that unless there is aready a plug there. I've been trough 4 kitchen remodels and was the GC for two of them.

I love all of the know-it-alls on this site.

The answer is that they are done both ways. Sometimes you direct wire it, and sometimes you plug it in. Either way, it's white / black / ground. Read any installation manual.

Seriously this might be the worst idea I've heard of in a long time. PP had the right idea. Seriously, hand wash the dishes and leave something revolting, like avocado on it. Do this for days. Also, switch to 7th generation natural dishwashing soap. (Seriously, that stuff is so bad, we tried it in order to go green and it looked like our dishes were covered in cat vomit). Set the plates in front of him and say "oh dear, this is dirty. The dishwasher is not getting the dishes very clean lately." And then just up the ante constantly. Bits of pork chop, you name it, should be stuck to those plates. Consider making oatmeal, just because that can stick to everything. And make sure you give him a nice tall glass of water with chunks of something weird floating in it.

I'm laughing so hard at my ideas that I'm waking my husband up. BTW, yes, you are totally stuck in the 50's but I'll enable you if you need it.

OP, you will be fine if you cut off the circuit breaker. This is how electricians do their work, they turn off the power to the circuit and then rewire it. Just MAKE SURE you turn of the right breaker and test the dishwasher. However, do NOT file the cord, you could cause a short and a fire, please do a clean break if end up having to cut it. most likely the dishwasher is hard wired iwth wire nuts so you might not have to do any cutting at all, just unscrew the wire nut. If your husband discovers it you can just "guess" that it came loose on its own.
