Hardly... do you know what academia pays? Not much considering all the schooling involved. But one of the perks is that there's more flexibility. Because I work from home, I also have flexibility. I'm hoping to rent out our house or do a home exchange to make it happen. And we're thinking so far in advance so that we can budget for extra expenses. My goal is to make whatever sacrifices necessary so that we can have an adventure mid life.

There's a website, sabbaticalhomes.com, or something like that. It's too far out to set one up, but this is a good place to look for possible house exchanges. Lots of foreign academics come to the DC area, and you can swap houses with one of them for the duration, or part of the year. Finding just the right swap could help you determine where you go. That is, you might dream of Paris, but find a fantastic house swap in a nearby area and commute to Paris for research and meetings.

My experience is several years out of date, but it wasn't hard for me to get a carte de sejour for my year-long stay in France. Just needed a letter from the sponsoring school. So, OP, your husband will need to have an affiliation with a local institution if you mean to stay the entire year.

Have to do some reading to find that's it's boring.

But they could stay somewhere within easy travel of Paris (which would include a good chunk of Europe!) and then OPs husband could just travel there a few times during the sabbatical.

If he studies Parisian history then you should stay near there. Remember sabbatical isn't do-as-you-please. It's supposed to be academic in nature. I'd suggest Normandy. It's 1 hour train from Paris and yet much cheaper.
