Up until now we would occasionally do a worksheet, DD is 4 1/2 so we just started to be more serious studying, 5 to 10 sheets a day, some writing, or simple math or tracing. Builds confidence. Her little sister 3 is getting into it now and likes to study too.

Are there a lot of Asians in your community 21:49. I can tell you that our ice skating classes are full of Asians, noticeably so probably as high as 1/4 of the kids learning although the community is not 1/4 Asian. I'm not prejudice and would never call anyone from another group by a negative name so I empathize with you and hope that your child does not have the same experiences. I'm black and I can tell you I do not see many blacks in Hockey of the blacks that I see ice skating the majority are girls doing figure skating and they are totally underepresented in ice skating compared to the community.

Voice your concern with stereotypes but make sure you voice it when people say that positive and negative comments, not just negative.

It's funny but why is playing tennis (or any non-contact sport for that matter), the violin/piano, or doing worksheet made out to be so negative?

Frankly, I'd take playing any sports and worksheet over camping for hours in front of the screen playing video games and watching mindless television.

I see plenty of other races in my son's gymnastics and ice skating class. As a matter of fact, in the 2 years that he has been in gymnastics, he's the only asian in his classes. Likewise with ice-skating, he's the only asian in the classes he's been in for the past year. FWIW, we started ice-skating because he wants to play ice hockey (yes, a contact sport!), and we would be fine with him doing this. He also plays soccer and if/when he gets bored of it we intend to introduce him to karate as I hear it helps with confidence building. We also do worksheets because he actually likes it, and it's not so bad to learn a few things from paperwork!

I see my son as innocent and sweet and I hate to see him face a world where other children are taught prejudice from their parents. I grew up in an environment where I was teased because I am asian (kids making slanted eyes, or doing karate kid kicks as I walked by). I grew thick skin and managed to ignore it but it was a dreadful experience when one is only 7 years old.

i'm 20:23 and i stand by what i said, that Asian kids do swimming, ice skating, golf, tennis, tae kwon do, and gymnastics - all individual and non-contact and white-dominate sports except tae kwon do.

19:51, I apologize for the stereotypes. I'd guess they can feel limiting if you're an Asian parent trying to raise your kids with a broad range of opportunities and possibilities. At the same time I do think there's some truth to the stereotypes, and many Asians will tell you this themselves.

well, i've got my K dc doing two worksheets per night - right after his (easy, imo) reading assignment. i'd like to crank it up, but will wait until he's mastered the current material. flame away.

PP, so when people say that Asians are smart or all the other positive accolades given, please make sure you comment about the stereotypes. Get as upset with both the positive and the negative. You can not have it both ways. FYI, your overall point is appreciated. Thanks.

The stereotyping here of Asians is so sad. Even if some of the posters are just trying to be funny it's still continues stereotypes that divide people on different levels. I'm Asian and our DS plays travel baseball and basketball. While there are not a lot of Asian ballplayers on the fields, there are plenty of Asian boys and girls who participate in these and other sports that I hope grown ups with ugly attitudes don't infect their children with their limited views. Again, while I know some of these comments were in jest, I'm just tired of the underlying tones which breeds and continues stereotypes that in the end hurts children - all children.

Plus, are you implying you're white and married an Asian guy? Everyone knows that's just fiction.

I understand single guys move out here to Loudoun and get issued an Asian wife to boss them around if they've lived here for five years in good standing. I'm about the only white guy here that's married to a white woman.

Not true, my Asian hubby played guitar, very poorly but he played it until his parents got so sick of it they let him quit. Then he took up bowling... Still has the trophies to proove it!
