I don't think you could get someone to do it properly for less than $750, because I don't think anyone who would do it properly is going to come to your house for less than $750 even if they have time for a small job for some reason.

I'm sure you can get someone to slap paint on them for much less.

Well, I guess an update is in order. I finished the $#%^@ job! The spindles were painted and I hated every minute. But, we moved out of that house (sold it) in 2016!

So, no need to keep this thread alive. The spindles are old news.

I did a 6×4 section for 80.00. There are 2 more sections and a rail
I'm 41 years experienced. This is labor only. Took me 4 hrs to just paint. Tape off,by the the stairs and wall. Honestly it's worth more. Two 6×4,1 8×4,and one 10' hand rail,if I was doing this by the job,I would easily charge 850.00

4 hour job and $80 are both funny. It’s all about how to prep and doing it right. The last few posts on page 1 covered it. Oil base primer or shellac if spraying are the only way to go if the spindles are stained. If they have been previously painted and there are any signs of chipping I’d also use oil base primer. If they are stained, tsp works as a cleaner or a deglosser works to clean and dull the protective polyurethane coat. After a wipe down it must be sanded (100, 150 grit) in all the grooves as well. Since it’s being painted, you only have to sand off the shine of the poly. When restaining, all the stain must be sanded out more than doubling prep time. All about that prep. Also try a mini roller for the spindles. Purdy ultra smooth 4 or 6 inch. Do 4 at a time, then switch to the other side and hit that side then back to original side to look for runs. Start 4 more etc. Afterwards use a small brush to get the base and the top where it hits the railing.

For the quoted costs above you could probably replace them.

Don't pay a professioal painter because I did and it was a total nightmare .Didn't prepare the wood properaly before he painted did not use wood putty in any holes indents and did not sand much at all.Told me he put 2 coats of Shermanwillams paint with primer already in the paint and I can see the old paint here and there through the new paint.Painter said he has been painting for 30years .If I wanted this paint job to end up looking as bad as this looks .I could have had my husband paint it and I wouldn't had to pay for laborer only to end up with such a crappy paint job.
