We put DC on medication recently. Though it was not a surprise to us, DC was diagnosed recently with mild ADHD (combined). We have been on a relatively low dose of Concerta for several months now. We too were very concerned about putting our young child (6) on medication, but we have no regrets so far. The difference is incredible to us. Our DC said the first day, "Mom, I feel so calm." A few hours into it, DC said, "It is still working. I hope it lasts forever." DC is in so much better control of emotions and impulses. DC is also much, much better able to attend at school.

I am so glad that your child seems to have a wonderful teacher. I would just consider that even with a great teacher (not to mention a bad one) children can get further and further behind without help. This not only has an impact academically, but emotionally. Good luck with your decision. We tried OT as well at first. It might have had some impact, but I think many of these issues are just not within the control of a 6 year-old.

19:11 here. Medication has done NOTHING to help my DS with handwriting. Wish it would.

OP here -- that is one of our biggest issues with our son. His handwriting at times can be (at best) mediocre, but other times is seriously like henscratch and pretty much illegible. If I dictate letters to spell the words, he does a little better, but if he has to write on his own, like in his writing journal, it is so painful. I'm curious to see if medication will help that.
