Everyone supports providing benefits for those who've worn the uniform, but housing, healthcare, education, food and gas subsidies. At some point this eats into the actual defense of the nation.
The real cause of the increase in college tuition is the lack of state funding and the increase in the availability of federal loans. Except for a few scrupulous private colleges, the GI Bill is not funding many colleges.
Benefits for veterans are the least our society can do to thank them for their service. They make incredible sacrifices for low pay. Junior enlisted members qualify for food stamps. An education is the least we can do.
This is probably an issue for a thread of its own, because its probably the easiest to be clouded with emotion. Of course when not taking budgets into account, we should provide all that we can. Jr enlisted members qualifying for food stamps is usually an outlier and the fault of their own doing. When they play their cards right, a car payment could honestly be the only thing they have to pay out of pocket, and these are almost always in regions with much lower cost of living expenses. Not just that but the communities that surround bases tend to be some of the most giving and give as much as they can to those living on post.
When you make 30k and you buy a 30k car, that becomes a problem pretty quickly, Sr enlisted and officers will agree with that notion and see it all too often.
