I don't get why it would be offensive coming from a white person if that white person is friends with the black people participating in the discussion. I mean, coming from a bigoted 80-yo, YEAH, of course. But from someone who is your friend in a normal discussion?

I am white, and I was also recently privy to a discussion about coffee between two black coworkers. They were discussing how much milk to add to coffee (e.g., do you want your coffee Beyonce or Jay-Z?). It was amusing, and I was left wondering if it was ever appropriate for a non-racist white person to do that.

I'm from Pittsburgh and black. Never heard the term here.

couple of years ago at my son's tball game the other team had an AA player who's nicknamed (affectionately) 'chocolate' by his teammates. he's the only AA player. i almost felt off my chair when they cheered for him using that nickname.

People on DCUM constantly say, "I graduated college." Allk of the Ivy Leaguers appear not to know that one is graduated from an educational institution. In my opinion, and I am not AA, I would think "chocolate" is offensive but I also find "whitey" or "the man" offensive when AAs are referring to Whites.
