The 5 miles each way take 18 minutes each way, more sometimes in bad traffic, but the education my DS is getting at STA is entirely worth the driving. I'd drive farther if I had to, even over the bridge if necessary.

I disagree. I switched to a school an hour from my home for high school and it made all the difference in the world to me. The academics were far superior, with many more opportunities for acceleration. The classes were much smaller, and the teachers more friendly and available. Ironically, the students were far less competitive with each other, perhaps because pretty much everyone who did well was accepted into a top-tier college. I was happy to have the commute time with my mother, and I think we had some of our best conversations back on those drives. Not the case for everyone, of course, but the right school can make a big difference, and may be worth a commute.

5 miles. 20 minutes by car; 45 minutes to an 1 hour by public transit. Next year (HS) it'll be a 15 minute walk. Can't hardly wait!

5 minutes. Moved from North Arlington to NWDC once first child accepted at private school. Admittedly, we had always intended to move back into NW at some point and it seemed like right time.

Bethesda to the Hill. From where you are I would strongly consider it. It's a great school.

Potomac School has bus service to Alexandria.

Live in NW DC. Drive 10-12 minutes to private school. It's on the way to my office, so entirely convenient.

1 mile and easy. If not we'd be in public.

Our school is in Potomac, and our commute over the beltway from Great Falls is about 40 minutes in the morning. The ride home can be a little shorter since it's not rush hour. There are several Alexandria families at our school (and some from still further away) -- it's just a matter of whether you find a more distant school that much better for your children/family, so that the commute is worth it to you. When you look at schools, you can always ask the AD if there are other Alexandria familieis and whether there are carpools. I personally don't mind doing the drive myself because it is great conversation time with the kids, and it gives them quiet time in the morning to review for tests. Audiobooks make the second half of the trip without the kids productive for me. Good luck.

20 minutes by car, but DD takes the bus both ways so I make the drive only once a week or so for events or volunteering.

11 miles, usually 25-30 minutes. The drive isn't so bad, it's the early wake-up that can be tough for the kids. (But they LOVE school and understand that is the trade-off)

This is us, too, except that there is a morning bus to school that stops about a mile from our house and the nanny deals with the afternoon pick up. Our kids don't do after care unless they want to take one of the after school classes. I think the morning drive would have become old within a couple of years, so I am grateful for the bus. The school is the opposite way from work, so the commute to work from school was a killer.
