I think the answer to "best grocery store cakes" depends on whether you want artificial colors, etc. If you like that kind of thing and you're used to it, cakes without it won't taste good to you.

Wegman's was flat, cheap-looking and frosting tasted off last time. LOVED Harris Teeter cakes last couple birthday cakes...if allergies are ever an issue for anyone Chantel's in Sterling is great.

Creative Cakes in Silver Spring is great and so is Sweetz near Dulles.

Wegman's for sure is delicious. I got one for a work promotion and thought "ugh, store cake" - but it was sooooo good I couldn't believe it.

wegmans is good now that they have changed thier frosting. also balduccis is pretty yummy, but really pricey for the size.
