My husband's cousin had one that said "whatever" on it (I don't remember how it was spelled exactly). She ran into David Spade in a parking lot and he complimented her on the plate!

I dunno - I've seen some REALLY good plates...like the mini-van that had the license plate "PIGSFLEW".

And I didn't quote it, but I disagree that the the license plate is only for other drivers. I think it can definitely be for the person driving...I put my kid in the back seat then walk around the back to get to the drivers seat. Which means if I had a personalized plate I could glance at it and smile at whatever memory prompted the personalization.

I'm sorry, I think they're unbelievably cheesy! It's the equivalent of giving yourself a nickname and insisting everyone in your circle call you that. I see them a LOT up here though which is surprising given how appearance driven this area is. If you're going to have a $70,000 car to prove you can afford a $70,000 car, why then go put a "DR KOOOL" plate on it??

So uncool. Sorry but you should remember there will be people out there like me who will judge you. You won't know who they are (eg could be DC's classmate's parent, neighbor, etc) so make sure you are comfortable with that. For my part, it screams ego trip and I would wonder why the person didn't give the money to a worthy cause rather than such a vanity project.
