Scratch, every time, including frosting. To me, there's not much point of "making" your own cake if you're going to buy a mix. Why not just go to the bakery and get a Giant brand? It will taste similar. There just aren't cakes like I like to make in mixes.

LMAO icing is literally JUST butter and sugar pretty much... what did you think it was??

It's cake batter not bread dough, you need a wooden spoon & a mixing bowl.

Everyone post your favorite (simple) cake recipe, or a link to one, please.

I heard great things about the Vanilla Bean Trader Joe's cake mix and a few weeks ago I bought it and it tasted like cornbread to me! It was the oddest thing. It smelled delicious though, and had big flecks of vanilla bean in it.

Yes, but in a pinch I will use Trader Joe's cake mixes, which are almost as good as homemade in terms of ingredients and results, and which taste nothing like e.g. Duncan Hines and the like.

Canned frosting is gross. On cakes and cookies.

I usually make cakes with fruit in them (apple, pear, etc) or carrot cake or walnut cake from scratch. But rarely, if I make a birthday cake that is white or chocolate I usually use a mix.

The ONLY boxed cake mix worth making is Funfetti. Otherwise, just make the cake batter yourself. It tastes ten times better and isn't much harder.

I've done and do both. Often the gluten free cake mixes come out better then my gluten free cakes from scratch so I've started doing mixes more often. I love Namaste mixes and King Arthur mixes.

I always do homemade frosting. Buttercream is my favorite.

I always make them from a mix. I'm not a baker though.

But, I will check out PPs recipe! If it's easy enough, maybe I can make the switch.
