There are three good reasons for a custodian in DC to make over $100K. One, he has worked in the job for 25 years. Two, DC has a very high cost of living ($250K is considered "middle class" on DCUM, so $100k is actually poor). Three, well, sorry, I can't think of the third one.

Well grope a few women, throw on a suit and head to the next GOP debate. They are holding open auditions very soon in a town near you!

I agree with that comment. Public unions are a disgrace.

Are you a DC resident?

I am sure that this well paid janitor does a good job. I also think it's great that the DC government has rewarded his years of service so well. That's really wonderful for him and his family.

For the people who are so opposed to these high salaries, what exactly do you expect to happen with annual raises being based on seniority? It's not just the public sector where this is a problem. I'm an admin at a law firm. I'm 30. I work really hard and volunteer for extra projects when I have spare time. There are people with the exact same title as me who do not ever pitch in for extra projects. They also support fewer attorneys than I do, come in late, leave early, shop online and socialize for the majority of that, and many of those ladies make tens of thousands of dollars more than I do, by simple virtue of having sat in that chair for 10 years longer than I have. Is this fair? No. But if they don't keep getting the annual raise, then I don't get it either.

Your tax dollars pay for a lot of things. Get upset about something significant.

Actually according to the economists, lawyers really aren't worth as much as they charge. In an article a month ago they said that the bar process is set up to reduce the number of practicing attorneys to keep fee levels high. Also, the prohibition on non-lawyers owning legal practices is a barrier to price competition.

As in any profession, there is a need for a certain number of top performers. But anticompetitive practices do have an impact on the professions.

Why? It is a dirty job and I bet you wouldn't do it for any price. Lawyers and doctors aren't worth as much as they charge either and they don't clean toilets. Yeah, for the janitor.

Just a comment, but as a DC employee (teacher) I have to say, the janitors at our school are some of the hardest workers I've ever seen. They are ALWAYS there, ALWAYS working, and ALWAYS helpful. Not only do they clean nasty stuff but they are always moving furniture, taking out huge boxes of trash, etc. They can't be paid enough for cleaning up vomit out of carpet and unclogging toilets all day.

At least there is one government employee where we know what work the person does.
I have not figured out what the rest do.
Attend tea parties, coctai parties etc?

Kind of a sad commentary that when DC residents choose between incompetence and the Republicans, they always choose the lesser of two evils.
