I was always wondering, why doesn't coconut water (at least strore-bought one) taste even remotely like coconut. Anyway I often drink it after working now as its very hydrating and contains electrolytes, and as written here in the article about coconut water weight loss, it contains few calories.

I would not beleive a TV report blindly either. TV reports are sometimes paid by other companies. If cocnut water becomes real popular, think about it, who loses money. Check the ingradients and calorie content of both coconut water and the subsitute products and decide for yourself. The other day I saw a ad which said High Fruictose Corn syrup or cane suger both are processed by the body the same way. Really?

Eh? You think high fructose corn syrup is better for you than cane sugar??

No that is not what I was trying to say. I was giving example of decptive advertising. No, high fruictose sorn syrup is definitely not better than cane sugar... but the TV ad try to make you think they are processed the same way by the body (which they are not).

It feels so strange reading this. I didn't know coconut water was a "new" thing here in the U.S. I am from Rio (Brazil) and there (and any other beach city) it is a very common drink. However, you drink it straight from the coconut (green coconut) and it tastes wonderful! Sometimes you do get a bad one, but it is usually sweet and "fresh" (it is clear).

After drinking the water, you can ask the server to cut it open for you and you can eat the pulp of the fruit - usually a thin jelly consistence thing... very yummy.

It is very rich in potassium and great to hydrate, but it is not a "cure all ailments" type of thing. It is just healthy and tastes good. They do give it to babies and when I went visiting I let my then 7m old try it and she loved it! The water and the pulp.

Keep in mind that is high caloric (less than Gatorade though).

I personally like the Vita Coco Cocounut Water. They have different flavors but my personal favorites are Tangerine & Pineapple. I run a few miles daily and drinking Vita Coco after my daily workouts definitely prevents me from cramping up and it is an awesome way to stay hydrated as well. I definitely recommend the Vita Coco brand if you have never tried it before!

I can't get into coconut water. My mom puts it in smoothies though and I could see that being okay. It does have a lot of potassium, so it's a good sport type drink, but I wouldn't put any more faith in it than you do in a bottle of gatorade or vitamin water for curing you of other ailments.

I'll drink just about anything, but coconut water tastes nasty.

Zico Chocolate Coconut Water is awesome!!! Very addicting. They do sell it at our Safeway. It's in the refrigerated end-cap by the produce section.

Zico brand apparently is the only one that has the amount of electrolytes and potassium that it promises. I do think it's a better substitute for gatorade.
