Why would Sidwell or any of the other schools want to hire a teacher who hasn't been in the classroom for 11 years? A lot has changed in elementary education.

Being out of the work force for 11 year it will be extremely difficult to get a job at a private school... that being said if you work at a top private (think sidwell, sta/ncs/beauvior, maret, gds) then you will probably be ok financially with child and spousal support supplementing. the small privates or the catholics will most likely not pay as well. my husband who was a big law lawyer recently transitioned to a gov't job where he makes about 1/3 what he was making. it was the right decision for our family but even with his ivy league law degree he had to apply to well over 100 jobs before he connected with the right one. the process took almost 2 years and he was highly qualified. i would imagine that competing against recent grads you might not even have a competitive edge, youll either be too qualified or the agency might have hesitations because you have so many obligations at home v. a 23 year old.

unless you're applying for a legal job (as an attorney only), or some Other excepted service position requiring a professional degree, then you'll have to compete with veterans and other merit appointment. Basically, this means that you won't even make it through initial screening process.


I know this to be true from applying for federal jobs for the past 10 months. Jobs that I'm overqualified for. Jobs that I could do in my sleep, when I was 24.

If you are not a vet, honestly, don't bother.

FYI: I think for you to even get a teaching job is going to be hard.

Start out subbing and see if you can get your foot in the door from there.
