The pizza guy just opens the door and whispers?

How dare these people deliver what you ordered!!!! It's just criminal!

I babysit and always write a post it sign and hang on top of the bell or knocker. I often order pizza and the guys always just open the door and whisper (if I'm not waiting outside already).

There's no mystery.

OP, there are really so many solutions to your problem that don't involve inconveniencing someone else (most of which have already been mentioned here.) White noise machine, disconnecting doorbell, get rugs so the sound doesn't travel, stop ordering so much crap from Amazon, get a smaller knocker, put up a sign.

I know you came on here to vent, I think you would have gotten more sympathy if you had done all these things and you still had a problem with door-to-door salespeople who knocked even though you had taken all the reasonable measures to solve your own problems.

We have a sign. Without it the delivery guys ring as a courtesy to let us know the package is there, not because of a signature.

There is an aggressive tree cutter guy in my AU Park neighborhood. He rings the doorbell repeatedly especially on Fridays as he wants Meth money to take home to West Virginia. When I refuse to answer the door, he yanks open the outer glass door, almost ripping it from its hinges, and then he drapes his sour, sweaty, sun-burned torso and arm against my solid maple door and bangs his meaty fist loudly hammering on the door and eventually he starts to bellow out the name of his company and that "he sees some trees dere in ma yard that need cuttin'". He does this until I come downstairs and tell him to go away. He does this several times in the spring and in the fall. I have a No Soliciting sign on my front porch. I have no idea how to make the crazies stop ringing the doorbell.

OP, do you live in arlington? We got soooo many people sellling crap door to door when we lived there. I think the scammers like neighborhoods where the houses are close together.

Its simple - stop ordering stuff that comes via UPS or Fedex if it bothers you that much.

And the guys who knock and drive away? They are just being courteous, some people may actually need the item that they are delivering right away. Like meds or something.

I don't know about OP, but I've never ordered anything off Amazon that needs a signature. I don't think anybody was suggesting the person come back later (although solicitors often will of their own volition).

When my children were little I had a sign on my door. It stopped the doorbell and the knocking.

OP, you'd have my sympathy if you were just talking about solicitors--I rarely ever get them and I'd give a pass to scouts or high school kids. But delivery men? Delivering stuff YOU ordered? Come on! And I appreciate the ones that knock rather than just leaving the package and driving away because I don't want my package sitting on my front stop until we go out or DH gets home. Even if I don't urgently need it.
