27 and 28 - 130k in our 401ks.

We still have about 130k in student loans though...

26 and I have 85k in investments for retirement and 20k in a Roth IRA.

I'm one of the PPs you are calling "BS" on. Why is that so hard to believe? We have both maxed out
401K contributions for 8 years. Actually the return on our investment is rather poor given our contributions.

For the record $1000 ...won't be saving until stop 'training' at 28 ish. But I agree with a PP I might as well stash money under my mattress than put it in a 401k gambling ring.

28 and my account has around 50K
28 DH has about 30K

don't feel bad. there are many, many like you. Paying the bills really is the most important thing right now. Roof over heads, food and clothing - if you can do more than that, count yourself among the lucky.

I bet someone could do a quick search and find the stats on how many people are just scraping by vs. those able to save anything at all (regular savings, retirement, etc). My feeling is that at least half the country is in the "just paying bills" category.

Both 33 and we've put in $30,000 to our account. We're saving $5000 a year since we're also saving for a house downpayment. I don't know the current value of the ROTH we're saving into. I know it sucks considering how much we've put in because of the market.

My husband will also have a military pension.

Presumably, the value of your house is higher than your mortgage. If so, your net worth is still positive.

We're 39 and have almost $200K dedicated to retirement. But, I'm not sure how much that means, because we also have a $300K mortgage.

So, if you look at it that way, we still have a negative net worth.

31, 100K , plan to spend it on buying rental properties and use that as retirement income. I have put money in 401k stock market for the last yen years and it hasn't some shit. The only, people making money in 401k are the people managing them. There should be a guarantee cause the return s have been crap. I also don't follow their advice and sold in 2008 and in april this year and made out pottery good. Dick investment bankers , 401k will be one of the biggest scams of our lifetime.

28 and 29. We have about $50k combined in our savings for retirement plus one pension.

About 500k, down some 50k last quarter, 34 and 37.

I'm not miserable though. One day (soon I hope!) this economy will improve and I will get a teaching job. I have my Master's plus some credits and I just need to find a job. My county is under a hiring freeze which will probably continue next year. I am apply to other counties next year but as a single mom, it is so much cheaper to have the same school calendar as my kids. The commuting will be $$$ too but at this point, I'll take almost anything. We are all very healthy so this is what I think about. It helps a lot.
