Although it is billed as a reading program, I definitely think it is great for helping poor spellers.

OP, sounds like spelling is a huge issue for your daughter. What have you already tried with her?

I have had really good success as a tutor with the workbooks from the abecedarian company. They are easy for parents to use (without the teacher manual) and relatively inexpensive. Depending on her issues you would start with either workbooks B1 and B2 (or B if you feel she can move more quickly -- honestly I'd just get B1 and B2 and have her move rapidly), then C, the "Spelling Patterns". Book D is for spelling words with Greek/Latin origin and she'd probably not need that.

So how many hours of homework is your 3rd grader doing each night? I can tell you even with a LD diagnosis, the school may not cut down on the amount of work but provide tutors and time management help especially if it's a G&T program. We were in a similar situation in another school system and while the lower grades were manageable with these accommodations by 5th grade it was making our family life miserable. We were up to 4-5 hours of homework everyday. Mostly homework but also lots of projects that took anywhere from 1-4 wks: doing 2 hrs each night and getting up at 5 AM to work some more before school started. Ridiculous. We changed schools and went to one that was a better fit for our DC and our family with no homework.

OP again - I do think AAP will be a good fit if DD has accommodations for whatever the tests reveal is holding her back. She's actually happier now in AAP than she was in 1st and 2nd grade. She loves the content, many of her friends are in the class, and she has had some successes. Also, she sees not everyone in the class is getting all Os. I have emphasized that grades are not significant at this point, and the most important thing is to do her very best work. She is working so hard, and although it takes her three times as long because I have her use a dictionary and/or engage in a mini spelling lesson to correct all the words she misspells, she keeps at it because she wants to do well.
