Well, unless YOU want to come up with your personal solution (i.e. driving your kids), then you take what you get and if that is a 50 min. bus ride, then that's what the public school offers. Lots of kids have been on 1 hr. bus rides. Parents around here want to coddle their kids too much. (Not that an hour bus ride is great, but it's free transportation. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.)
It would only be free tansportation if you do not pay property taxes!! Struggling with my kids 1 1/2 hour bus ride that is a 25 minute direct drive. On at 6:30 and off at 5. Bigger than most adults work day!!! Long day for a elementary school kid- Long day for any kid!!!!
That is a crazy long (and early) day for an elementary school kid! What are the hours of school?

1.5 hours one-way or 1.5 hours total? If one-way, I think that is against transportation policy (if you are in Fairfax). One hour bus ride max.

Yeah, my middle school kids swim at 4:45 am most mornings. Not for everyone. But, after a number of years ... the discipline, time and organizational management skills and superlative academic performance are invaluable. Only recommend this to those passionate for the sport and fit in body and mind.

The long bus ride isn't for everyone. I reminder walking to school for 1 and 1/2 miles as a kid (with other school mates) outside of the US. It was great for bonding. Some kids prefer TV though.

Under 10 min (depending on the 2 traffic lights on the route to school). It takes longer on the way back from school.

OP again. I just wondered what the norm was, and what people considered to be excessive, too.
Fortunately I am able to drive and pick up my child, so I guess that is what I will do. The choice betwee 12 minutes (I timed it today) versus 50 minutes IF things are running on time, which they sometimes aren't, is just too stark.
Of course I understand that times are tough and someone has to be on the end of the route. but My child has a ton of homework and I'd also like him to get to have some down time and play time each day. Not to mention participate in some after school activities.

One of my kids would go crazy spending that much time on the bus every day. How far away is the GT center from your house?
I could drive there in 10 minutes. She has lots of friends on the bus, so that helps pass the time.
I would pick her up...but my son is at our base school and they have the exact same dismissal time. I can't make it between the 2 schools during the kiss and ride window, and if I were to just pick her up, I'd likely miss her brothers bus.
She's also the only one at her stop, and in our neighborhood, so there's just no good solution.
