My first stop whenever I go home is Cove Fish Market in Mystic, CT, for their fried clams. Yum! Too often here, clam strips are the only option.

I took my mom and sister to Liberty Tavern on H Street a few months ago. We shared the fried clams and were very pleased. It's owned by two guys from NE. Here is an excerpt from their website:

"Scott Hamilton, owner of Hamilton’s Bar & Grill and DC resident for the past 10 years, originally hails from Massachusetts. Chef Graig Glufling went to culinary school at Johnson & Wales in Rhode Island. Both share a love for New England and its staple seafood fare. What a joy to hear of a great soul who loved the famous 7E's fried clams. As a child and through my teens , I traveled from Brighton, Mass to Nantasket each summer, and always stopped at 7E's for the BEST and I mean the BEST fried clams ever offered anywhere. I seem to remember they came in a tall paper cup, but in any case just the taste of 7E's fried clams clouded everything other than their deepest enjoyment. I too have been looking for 7E's fried clams since I returned from the Fijian islands where I spent 20 years, but unfortunately all I found have been mediocre to moderate comparisons. For 7E's fried clams were not only delicious and cooked to perfection but they were a highlight in a child's youth of excitement and adventure headed to and coming from summer vacations on the beach in Nantasket. "Ahhhh, the simplicity and enjoyments of youth" .So, to our disappointment we may not find 7E's and the enjoyments of our youth, but should you or should I or should anyone ever come across the greatest fried clam shack anywhere it would be wonderful to hear about it. As the person who recommended Freddy's I will say that it's unlikely they will match your mom's memories, but they are still pretty good.

(OP)- good to know! And no, I don't like clams at all, this is solely for my mom, who lives here now and dreams of finding clams like the 7E's from her childhood...

I would not Fedex the fried clams, but maybe the clams without the batter. Call the (*NE*) fish place and see what they say. They know what they are talking about. Unlike, well nevermind.
