Exactly. At least DEET has been used for a long time by a lot of people and it's safer than being bitten by mosquitoes.

why are there so many mosquitos now? I am considering hiring a company to treat our yard this year because it has become absolutely impossible to play outside -- I don't like slathering my kids with DEET when they want to go outside -- my DD seems to get bitten in particular a lot, sometimes one gets in our car and she'll end up with 7-10 bites in a short car ride. Last year they kept getting in the house. It was maddening.

It is fairly woodsy near our house and we are a few blocks from a creek. Is that why it is so bad? I grew up around here also and don't remember the problem being so significant.

My hesitancy about using Mosquito Squad or a similar company is twofold -

1) Our lot is fairly small and close to our neighbors, so if they don't treat and we do, will it really be worth the money?

2) the chemicals make me nervous, but it sounds like the organic treatment isn't all that effective

any tips for other products that help control mosquitos? I'm planning the full court press for this year.

It's like this: When I was growing up in this area we could play outside all day long and not worry about mosquitoes. At dusk they would be out and you might get a bite or two, but they went away again after dark.

Now, before mosquito squad I would get five bites in the time it took me to unlock my door, and that's walking directly from the car with keys in hand. Gardening or any outdoor activity meant slathering myself and my children in DEET, with the level of effectiveness directly proportional to how much I reeked of DEET. The "family" version with low DEET content keeps mosquitos off for 10 minutes or less. Nothing else really works. So summer became a time when I dreaded going outdoors, except for places (like downtown, oddly) where there weren't mosquitoes.

With mosquito squad, I have the summer back, and can eat an outdoor meal at any time. It is great, and my children get to have summers like I did.

I think I've posted in this thread, and others about Mosquito Squad. I can assure you the only affiliation I have with the company is paying them to get rid of the mosquitos at my house. They do that. It is WONDERFUL. But go ahead and be suspicious and don't hire them. It won't matter to me, because I'll be in my yard, playing with my kids, and not getting bitten.

Wow, really? That's a pretty strong recommendation. I already saw a few mosquitoes out this evening as we went for a walk. I think I'm giving Mosquito Squad a call this week.

Life changing. If I lost my job, Mosquito Squad would be the last thing to go, after food.

I tried everything for years - natural, dumping water, fans, Off, candles - they just don't work. As a result, I spent about 4 years not being able to use my porch or deck. What's the point of having an outside area if you can only use it maybe 2 months a year? I tried Mosquito Squad last year and it was absolutely amazing.

We cannot go in our front or back yard due to mosquitos. We are definitely considering Mosquito Squad or something similar.

My son and his family use the Chattanooga, TN location and are extremely happy with the results of their service. I am going to use their service on our townhome in Georgetown.

we just signed up with the northern virginia location in manassas. we were able to get a significant discount be signing up early. my parents in vienna used them all last year and said their stuff really works. i'm looking forward to a bug free summer!
