Dentists.

The only time I felt ripped off by a vet was when I made the mistake of going to an office affiliated witha big pet store chain. All they wanted to do was to sell me an expensive prepaid pet health care plan for all kinds of things not necessary for my dog.

Omg, why do we owe them a living? Dentists in the 19th century were on about the same level as snake oil salesmen. I'm not talking about Dental surgeons here, just garden variety dentists. I quit one on New Mexico Ave because he was clearly a junkie and stoned out of his mind most of the time during my visits. The hygenicist (sp) does most of the heavy lifting anyway. The guy seemed like a butt pincher--I would never allow myself to be unconscious with him--he just creeped me out.

Both, actually. I know dentists have the highest suicide rate--probably because so many of them are charlatans who couldn't get into med school. Vets also suffer insecurity complexes because they didn't get into med school. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I'd bet a fair number of older ones fit into this category. The younger ones of course, are actually the best and the brightest (Tufts Veterinary, etc.,) I know they have big over head but JEEBUS, we're talking cats and dogs here sheeple! I think their professional orgs just got together about 20 years ago and said: YOU KNOW WHAT? VETERINARY SCHOOL VERY IS EXPENSIVE! WE NEED TO GET A BETTER RETURN ON OUR INVESTMENT! AMERICANS LOVE THEIR PETS BEYOND ALL REASON! WE COULD BE CHARGING THEM 10 TIMES WHAT WE DO AND THEY WOULD STILL PAY!!! LET'S DO IT! And so it began and they never looked back.

Pediatricians

Vets. Absolutely vets.

I think vets because their fees have really skyrocketed over the years. And the things they now offer/pressure you to do . . .

Oh please. No one's complaining about paying for basic services. It's about the constant hard sell on all kinds of unnecessary extras.

Vets, though I've also had a dentist who did a bunch of work that (in retrospect) I'm not convinced was really necessary.

I've been charged for unnecessary things by both vets and dentists. I now have a vet who I trust (though I think others in the practice do sometimes play with my emotions for unnecessary procedures) and switched to a dentist that I love. Suddenly, the 5 things that I "needed" to have taken care of next visit at my old dentist became either non-issues, or just things to keep an eye on.

Actually Union Veterinary Clinic is great. Their prices for food/pet supplies were a lot cheaper than what we are paying now, in PA. They were even cheaper than what you can order online. They were honest and checked in before doing anything. I think the big problem is the larger clinics; stick with the smaller ones (who might not have a $1million facility to pay for) and you'll likely have better luck.

Dentists aren't that bad in my experience, it's orthodontists who are in it for the $$$.

do not live in Washington DC or Bethesda. I'm absolutely certain of that.

You need to find a new vet. Or don't have a pet.

Wow, you guys are a bunch of anti-dentites! I loved both dentists I have seen in the area (McLean & NW DC). They never tried to sell me on anything. Do you take care of your teeth?!
