I've been looking for a sign and could not believe what it really cost. I am going to look at Party city and other party stores now. Thank you for the suggestion. But isn't having a new baby in and of itself the clue that you have a new baby? Unless you keep it inside all the time...

The threat is having your baby kidnapped.

Why give them the clue?

When you buy fancy electronics you also let the boxes outside on the curb to let everybody know what a great TV you bought? Or a new laptop?

You people really take your safety for granted...

Couldn't a baby napper just see that you have a new baby by the fact that...well...you have a new baby? Do you disguise it as a dog or cat when you leave the house with it? Do you get all packages from diapers.com sent to an anonymous post office box? Do you take the carseat out everytime you leave the car unattended? Because someone could see that and deduce that you have a baby.

I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass, (other than my comments above) but I don't get it. What are the threats people are afraid of?

Actually, baby kidnppings from hospitals were usually relatives - like estranged dad's or crazy ex-MILs.

If someone wants to kidnap a baby, they don't need to drive around looking for a newly arrived stork sign on a lawn, and guess what color it is. They just follow very pregnant woman matching the kind of kid they want from an OB's office and find out where they live.

That said, my neighbors put out wellcome baby signs for us when DS2 was born. My DH promptly took them down because he is a security freak.

Thanks but I would never do this--the safety concerns alone are significant enough that the tiny risk outweights any benefits. And it's not really cute.

If it was so rare as you all portrait the hospitals would not have such well set system to avoid such crime. And you just need one baby to be stolen to have your life changed forever. Do you think it's worth taking a chance?

I'm putting one up when my new grandson arrives this week I don't think it is tacky at all and lots of happiness with your new little one

Sweetie, I think it's awesome to have a sign in your yard announcing the happy news! And it's ridiculous that folks are worried about safety. Seriously...what kind of neighborhoods do you live in?

My best friend decorated my door with a huge pink bow and a "It's a girl" banner. I don't see anything "tacky" or "trashy" about any of that.

Our neighbor down the street just put a little stork in her front yard announcing the birth of their son. I don't know them all that well. I knew she was pregnant, but had no idea when she was due. I'm going to run down there later tonight with a cake and a little gift.
