I have not had bad enough nausea to ask for the Zofran, but OP asked about Unisom. For people who might search this later I'll add some info since Unisom is working for my milder queasiness.

Unisom under that brand name comes in 2 chemical formulations. The tablets (not gel caps) is doxylamine. That is the same ingredient that when mixed with vitamin B6 was marketed as Benedictine. It was taken off the market and was recently approved by the FDA to go back on the market in June 2013 under the name Diclegis.

Unisom is also the same chemical as Benedryl which is on Reiter Hill's and Shady Grove's safe list for 1st trimester drugs. I was initially reluctant to take it, but today on my release papers from Shady Grove they actually suggest it.

I have been taking 12.5mg of Unisom and 1/2 a B6 tab each night and it is taking the edge off my sickness so I can function. I had a hard time finding non-gel Unisom in a local drug store, so I got 2 bottles of Kirkland brand on Amazon for $5 or so.

For those other posters who still are dealing with illness, when Zofran was not enough to keep food and liquids down for me (3 ER visits in total for IVs)--started with 4mg under the tongue type, upped to 8mg every 8 hours--still didn't work on its own, they gave me Reglan that stopped the vomiting enough where I was getting some fluids/nutrients. You may have to ask for Reglan. My 2nd ER visit, all they did was re-prescribe Zofran for me, and my doctor was livid. She said it obviously wasn't working so they should have given me the Reglan (thus I had to go in for a 3rd time). I don't remember the mg dosage for Reglan, but I had to take it every 6 hours. They gave me Phenegran for nighttime too, but it made me too groggy to be able to work even a little, so I only took it once or twice. The worst of it lifted at 12 weeks, so I weaned myself off both Zofran and Reglan because they gave me weird side effects (claustrophobia and restlessness), and honestly, I was so sick of taking pills all the time that I couldn't wait to stop. I am still getting sick at 22 weeks, but maybe once or twice a week now when I'm having a bad day, which my doctor said would happen from time to time. The nausea is still around but nowhere near as bad as during the first trimester. Good luck to you all! It was a terrible time, and I wish I was completely better, but at least it is now bearable! Hyperemesis is the worst, but it's real, so ask for as much help as you can get to help you through!

OP first off I'm so sorry for your loss. I too had horrendous morning sickness around the clock. Zofran took the edge off (meaning I was only vomiting once a day and just nauseous the rest). Ice cold sprite helped me quite a bit, I was able to sip on that and take in bites of crackers. Overall it was a miserable 8 weeks. I used up a years worth of PTO in those 8 weeks (plus one unpaid day), and was pretty nonfunctional most of the time. Yes the Zofran and Sprite helped, but nothing made me feel functional until I was out of the first trimester.

I was on Zofran for 30 weeks! It helps so you don't throw up, but it does not take the naseau away. Just re read your posts OP, and I am so sorry for your loss.

OP here. Thank you so much for your supportive post. I had a D&C on Friday and the nausea is finally beginning to subside, so I can start to heal. I am grateful for your kindness. It has been very hard.

OP, are the doctors sure that the pregnancy is no longer viable? Something similar happened to me - went to ER for a combo of the Hyperemesis dehydration and massive bleeding from a subchoreonic hematoma. They sent me home saying that I would miscarry by Monday but they were wrong. The HG lasted for several months but went away at end of 2nd trimester. I'm hoping that you were lucky as well.
