We are a VA family and each of our kids has seriously considered schools in CA, including UCs. And they each have several HS friends who went out to CA - Stanford, Cal, UCLA, USC, UCSB, etc.

Agree,this poster is unhinged, geez. A B- I can see, but a C- is tough unless there is a reason to write about in additional info section or counselor will write in his/her letter. Some privates that are very rigorous or have older teachers that are set in their ways and are crazy graders are called out in the counselor letter. Again, this is a rigorous private with reputation for strong academics, and taking one particular class is known for max rigor (non DMV private).

It’s fine that other students like the UC system, but this parent seems more interested in VA in-state options.

OP, are the grades weighted or unweighted? Could he retake the C- course this summer in an accredited community college? He doesn’t have to retake the exact course especially if he has gotten As in the next courses in the series but if he takes a course in the A-G category where he got the C- then that would go further with UC.

I don’t think this is true anymore unless you are FGLI Hispanic.

UCs require a C or higher in A-G classes regardless of demographic. If the C- was in one of the classes that meets the A-G then no UC will take them. The state audits and several years ago caught Cal admitting students who were staff kids/friends of AO, donor kids and other shady connections who weren’t qualified. The only reason the state caught Cal doing this was because those kids didn’t have a C or above in all A-G. I’m sure there were plenty of non qualified admits who weren’t hidden by “holistic” but if you don’t meet the basic eligibility the state can catch the university.

I think W&M would be a big reach and tough with that GPA. VT and JMU are certainly possible (Tech admission can really depend on major). You may also want to consider UMW, VCU, and CNU for in-state.

UDel and Pitt are possible OOS options. This student will still have plenty of solid colleges to choose from. Just be realistic and apply widely to a range of schools. It’s great that he’s shown improvement and an upward trajectory!
