I would never even think to put my clothes in a carport...or my patio...or outside deck, etc. That seems very odd to me. I don't have an attic. We have plastic bins that we slide under the beds and also, have a plastic bin full of sweaters that we keep in the storage room in the basement...but it's tight. Definitely need to purge one of these seasons.

I live in Fairfax County and there are a lot of houses here with carports. Probably at least half the houses in a lit of neighborhoods.

Do you live in the dmv? The difference between summer and winter here is extreme. You can't wear winter clothes in the summer and vice versa. I pack away coats, thermals, sweaters, long sleeves, jeans, pants, gloves scarves, hats, socks, etc in summer. I store them in plastic totes in my basement. I then pull out my summer clothes: shorts, short sleeves, swimsuits, sandals, lightweight pants and tops, beach towels, etc. Mine is a small, yet organized home. Packing away items I don't use for 4-6 months at a time is the key to my home looking organized and not bursting at the seams.

Yes, I’ve been in NoVa for 35 years. I am well aware of seasons. And like I said, I have a reasonable amount of clothes that they fit easily in my average-sized closets. We aren’t hoarders.

Is that a neighborhood? Never heard of it. Glad I didn't have to house hunt there with all the carports.

+1

I’ve stored my off season clothes in plastic for many years without problems. However, last week I opened a plastic bin filled with cotton and linen shirts (about 15 shirts, the backbone of my summer wardrobe, collected over years, natural fibers only, no synthetic blends) was shocked by the powerful smell of mildew that emanated from it. So I’ve been spending time ever since soaking them, washing them with a special detergent to get rid of the smell, with varying degrees of success. Some are clearly beyond saving. I’ll never use plastic storage bins again.

How will they get into sealed plastic bins?

As a general rule, these containers aren't air tight. Moths and carpet beetles love natural fabrics. They can get into the bins through tiny spaces along the bin tops. I have had this happen. Mice can squeeze through really small gaps, but the bigger issue is chewing through the plastic. It's more likely they will go after food than clothes. In my childhood, mice ate our felt Christmas stockings, stored in bins in a carport closet.

This. It's insane to me that you can't fit all your clothes in your closet all year around. You all are hoarders. Plain and simple. What a waste of time, money and space living like that.

That all depends how big your closet is doesn’t it? We used to share a tiny reach in closet. Then we took over some adjacent space to add a nice walk in closet. So much less need to sort seasonal clothes now.

I still like the discipline of sorting since it forces me to decide if it’s time to donate items. Also I put my wool sweaters into bins to reduce risk of moths/sweater eating bugs.

I store them under the bed.

Same. I used to move clothes to the guest room by season but no more. Closet is just crammed full of everything.

I also used to keep a clean house. Now? It's sanitary but please don't look at the baseboards.

We store winter coats in the back of the coat closet during the summer.

I wash all hats and gloves and then they get stored in plastic bin in the same closet.

Winter knitwear (sweaters, scarves, etc.) gets laundered, folded, and then stored on high shelves in my closet. Not in anything, just stacked on shelves with lavender sachet's and cedar blocks layered between.

Denim and synthetic items also get stored in my closet on high shelves, but I store them in large plastic bins.
