Made in DC has stuff from local artists. I'd do that over Starbucks. Add some coffee from a local shop, too.

Depends on where they are moving - could limit the ability to take food or liquids. We moved 7 times with the military and we were trying to give away all of our spices, sauces, alcohol, etc. I just appreciated a hearty farewell and promise to stay in touch! No gifts.

Can you get them something for the old city and the new city? Most cities have merch you can find that isn't from Starbucks.

Nobody needs more mugs. The idea of a map of the neighborhood with everyone signing it is super nice. It’s meaningful, it’s not bulky, and it’s unique. Do this!

Omg no. I received a DC-shaped cheeseboard once, it’s basically unusable lol. The dish towel I got w the DC stars and stripes was cute though.

Some other ideas:
A neighborhood gift basket. I'm thinking coffee from the local shop, cookies or treats from a neighborhood bakery, local honey or jam, along with handwritten lists of "Things we'll miss doing with you," from each neighbor

Print a map of the neighborhood and have everyone sign around it with little messages, and get it framed.

A custom ornament shaped like their house, or shaped like the state they are leaving.

Is this a gift for them to take with them or to leave in the rental house? Honestly, the last thing I would want when moving is more things especially glassware to pack. If they’re moving within the US, a gift card to use on restaurants or Costco would probably bring more joy and get more immediate use.

I agree with this. I already have more mugs than I can use, but I'd much prefer to get a pretty mug with a subtle cherry blossom design than a generic Starbucks mug which feels a lot more touristy.


I bought two of the DC cherry blossom starbucks mugs for my friend when she was moving away.

I'd rather have the Starbucks mug because if it's attractive I'd keep it. And if not, I'd have no guilt getting rid of it. A piece of art/framed craft is a burden if someone doesn't like it aesthetically.

Tree ornament is on par with a mug. But it would be out of season so would probably take awhile to get into the right box to ship.
Thanks for your opinion on my ideas, I guess. What are your suggestions?
