Subject: Heads up - MCPS eliminating most neighborhood bus stops for programs
I’m confused. I understand this sucking this coming school year. But for the following year when we switch to regions, there will be buses within your region.
So like my home school is Sherwood for example but if we choose a program at PBHS and kid goes there, they will bus them to PB.

I think because they know those parking lots/loops are big enough for the buses, and there are often extra pedestrian safety measures near schools like crosswalks and sidewalks.
+1. It might not be ideal for your kid, but the answer to "why are they so focused on putting bus stops at the places built and designed for bus traffic" is pretty to figure out.

45 minutes honestly doesn't seem that bad? many school bus commutes take that long. I lived right at the 2 mile mark from my high school, didn't have bus service, and that's how long the walk was (so we carpooled).
It is when you go back and forth twice a day. We don’t have any good ride on options.

I'm in Region 1 and there's a good ride-on route to the school we're zoned for and an ok one (drop off 0.7 mi from school) for 1 other school.
The other 3 schools are 15-20 min by car, but all would involve a bus transfer and 45+ min travel time.

For high school programs some kids can take ride on buses. Currently there are ride on buses a 10 minute walk from our house that go to 3 of the 4 other schools in our region. However we do live near a transit hub so I suspect this won't be feasible for most unless Ride on can adjust their routes.

And this is all a self-inflicted wound by MCPS-- if they hadn't decided to add 100 new regional programs and kill the DCC and NEC but grandfather everyone in for up to 4 years, they wouldn't be in such a bind transportation-wise.

Future expectation for regional programs is MCPS/MoCo locations - so schools (HS, MS, ES) as well as County buildings, like maybe a library or a Community Rec Center.
I would expect neighborhood stops to disappear.
Also be mindful, these stops would have to be early to have a timely arrival for start of high school. So definitely no counting on your local high school bus to get you to school first.

This only works if RideOn is accessible to you. There area residential areas in MoCo where this is not true - it'd be a couple miles just to get to the closest RideOn stop.
