As others have said Mohonk feels old money summer vacations. It's historic and extremely well maintained but glamor and shiny finishes is not the point. We went to Mohonk regularly when I was a kid and it still remains one of my favorite places. The lake is awesome and there are rock climbing paths https://www.mohonk.com/recreation-activities/rock-scrambles/ and croquet and hiking. In those days you had to wear a jacket and to dinner, but it's more relaxed now. Food is delicious. It's an experience few other places can match. Spend time browsing their website and they show plenty of kids. But I do think they'd expect kids to be reasonably well behaved. It's not Atlantis.

Basin Harbor Club on Lake Champlain in Vermont also worth checking out

White Barn Inn - Kennebunkport
Claremont Hotel - Southwest Harbor
Wildflower Farms - Gardiner, NY
Lake House Canandaigua - Finger Lakes (not NE but on the way to Canada!)

It feels high end like old money but drive a beater car high end. So classy. Not kid-centric but plenty for kids to do (and run by Mohonk employees so adults can sip cocktails on the porch while kids whisked out of eyesight for an enriching outdoorsy thing).

This made me lol because it's how Spruce Point Inn felt to me, only past its prime but we still loved it. Totally low key and not fancy.

What’s funny about Mohonk is they clearly spend money to keep it up but they are not changing the style— so it’s a little old fashioned without feeling a little run down.
