DD applied to UVA ED, was deferred to RD, and then waitlisted and offered YIW. With the YIW program, DD was concerned that the transfer to C’ville would put her behind other students socially and academically and that she would be playing catch-up in developing connections with peers and professors. She absolutely loves the school she chose and it was the right choice for her BUT the YIW program seems like a great option for VA students who really want a UVA diploma.
The YIW year would definitely put her behind, socially.

They're waitlist kids, so probably close to the admitted group, but maybe a little shy of some of their stats? How should we know?

Donna Price Henry, chancellor of the College at Wise... also said there are currently 85 students participating in the Year in Wise program — an option for waitlisted in-state and rising first-year students to spend a year at the College at Wise before coming to Grounds — a jump from the 67 students in the Year in Wise program from last year. According to Henry, the target and maximum number for this program is “always” 100 students.
Henry said the incoming student class totals 613 students — including 395 freshmen, 85 Year in Wise students and 133 transfer students — which is an increase from the 560 students in the fall 2025 incoming student class.
