We didn’t give either of our kids gifts for high school graduation, but we are paying their tuition, rent, food, buying stuff for their apartments, etc.

My children did not get gifts for graduation.

Graduation was an expectation.

An education is their gift.

We went to dinner to celebrate; that's it.

I just texted my kids who are in their 30s if it bothered them that we did not get them gifts. They all were adamant: hell no. LOL

Are we talking card and small gift or a new car?
Did parents attend graduation?

We have not given our 18 year old a gift. We bought her a ticket to see Grandma - since she (GMA) could not make it for graduation. We also bought a laptop, will be paying for all 4 years of college and bought dinner tonight. DH bought a card.

Yeah. We decorated. Got a special cake. Grandparents came for graduation and we had a special dinner out.

My sons didn’t want parties. No gifts expected. They received $$$$ from close family friends and relatives. I did get them clothes from their schools- polo, t-shirt, car magnet a few weeks prior.

Both are at $90k/year schools full pay and one has one of our SUVs. Nobody upset about no specific grad gift for HS.

We also are going to Europe for 10 days which I told grad was post-grad trip.

Just piling on that 4 years of debt free college is the gift. And both my kinds appreciate that now that they are out and realize that plenty of their friends have student loans.

Isn’t college tuition a gift in and of itself?

Op, I’m curious what your friend wanted. What was she hoping for?

For DS's high school graduation, DH and I with our other kids and grandparents, all went to the ceremony. DS was much fussed over and lots of pictures were taken. Afterwards we went to a party at the home of DS's best friend, the cost of which DH and I split with BF's parents. That summer, in addition to paying the fall semester's tuition and room and board, he got a new laptop to take to college, and we spent hundreds of dollars on stuff to outfit his dorm room. Then DH and I took 2 days off from work and paid gas, food, and lodging to drive him to college, carry all his stuff into his dorm in the blazing heat, and help set up his room. Then we paid for transportation back and forth from college for fall break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break. Rinse and repeat ×3.

Come on, OP. Are you trying to tell me that he also needed a special token of our appreciation? I love this kid and am very proud of him. But he gets more than enough stuff from us.

She's upset?

Well, she can pay for college on her own if she wants.
