From what I understand, 2nd St students often take the school shuttles in early middle school, but most transition to taking Metro in upper grades.

How is that shaking out for Cooper? Cooper feels a lot less transit accessible than 2nd St to me. Do Cooper students keep riding the school shuttles into upper grades, or do they just make do with transit?

Cooper is a mile from Brookland metro. 2nd street is .8 of a mile. Not sure why people keep saying 2nd street is so close to the metro. Plus you have to cross NH ave to get to 2nd st. Lots of Brookland kids just take the d74 and others metro and do the same. My kid is at cooper and takes the d74. She has to cross 2 streets on the way to school after she gets off the bus and a crossing guard is at 1 of them. The guard is there on the way home also. And Latin has someone posted to assist.

It’s a pleasant, pedestrian-populated 15 minute walk from Fort Totten to 2nd.

It’s a desolate 25 minute walk (uphill!) from Brookland to Cooper. It’s not even comparable if you are being honest. I can’t speak to the school quality because we dismissed it entirely because the location is awful.

“Uphill” If your child thinks walking up that hill is taxing you probably need to evaluate their fitness. I’m old and I run up that thing frequently. My 11 year old isn’t bothered by the hill and really just socializes the whole walk if she chooses to walk. Or she just takes a bus that drops her off a few blocks away.

I run it all the time as well. But the route sucks.

There isn’t even a sidewalk up the exit ramp from John McCormack.

I mean, you send your kid wherever, but it’s not a comparable location to 2nd. At all.

It is ok if you don’t want to send your kid there. There are plenty on the waiting list so no one misses you. And glad you have a good option.

Yes, we were lucky to have a much better option, but it’s awful that people have to settle for such a sub-par experience for their kids. Parents need to do better

Great advice- do better. I'll work on that, it's very helpful and actionable.

+1. I’m so glad you are not a Cooper parent. FWIW my kid is having a great experience. Since you do not have a kid at the school perhaps you should move on.

It is always funny when people post something that can be checked with a quick Google Street View- yes there is a sidewalk on the ramp up to Taylor from McCormack. Also the best way to walk from the metro station up to the Cooper campus would be to cut northwest across the Catholic U campus and then north on Harewood, which has a longer and steep hill than going west on Taylor.

Catholic is technically not an open campus. I don’t know if the schools discourage cutting through, but that’s typical.

We live nearby and go to the campus periodically for events and have walked through at all hours. Nobody will care about a 12-18 year old kid walking across campus at 8 AM and 4 PM.

The security guards and campus police will absolutely care about groups of kids in uniforms or not cutting through campus, and they absolutely should. what drugs are you on? They have good reason to keep it closed!

I run the Harewood hill when I want to get some hills in, it is one of the tougher hills in DC. Harewood has a decent bike lane, and from there it’s a short jaunt to the school. That being said, most people come up Taylor.

The sidewalk coming up harewood is fine, but the one coming up Taylor is really quite narrow and I have to run in the street for a bit of it. It’s not safe.

I think there’s a bike lane coming in but Nick Della Donne’s group will need a payoff for it to happen. The townies hate the schools in the area, and are actively campaigning against them.

At all.

The walk from 2nd street to FT. Totten isn’t great. I commute around there regularly and have had some close calls on the bike at that New Hampshire intersection.
