That's crazy. I wonder what you really get for that kind of money and you would think that families with that kind of money to spend wouldn't have an issue getting into college. You have to wonder how many kids at the TTs are getting this sort of support. I've talked to several counselors that charge 20-25k over 4 years. This includes help with extracurriculars and developing projects and then later in high school help with essay writing, narrowing down options, etc. I follow Kate Stone on instagram and she's probably charging on the higher end. I find her sort of grating but she talks a lot about helping her clients develop high-impact projects and curating unique opportunities.

Kate Stone is 100-200k for all 4 years depending on level of service.

The Kushner's allegedly donated $2.5 million to Harvard in the late 90s to get Jared in. They had no other ties to Harvard so were starting from scratch. And apparently Jared had no chance of getting in on his own merits.

"For example, a score of 400 would require a donation of new football uniforms. 300, a new dormitory. And in Larry's case, we would need an international airport."

"Yale could use an international airport."

LOL. That's hilarious. I wrote the post you responded to but totally forgot about that episode - I guess it was in the back of my mind. Well done.

My kids were/are at a top private NYC school with 1 counselor for every 25 kids.

We didn't get an independent counselor, but I'm sure others did, although they kept it on the down low. I found the school counseling to be .. okay. The original list had places like Richmond. My kids both ended up at t10 schools, one at HYP.

I really did a lot of the work myself. I listened to a ton of podcasts.

- Create a story/soundbite - not good enough to be interested in medicine, has to be language of giraffes niche-y. And you can do that on your own.
- Send a brag sheet to guidance counselor with sentences that are begging to be cut and pasted. You want to add to the story from an outsiders POV. How Shelly didn't just do research at the zoo, but started a legacy - there are now 4 sophomores doing their own research at the zoo. That kind of thing. Shows impact on her community.
- Secure LOR from the people with a good track record. There are favorite teachers and then there are teachers who can write great LORs. They're not always the same.
- Naviance or similar for privates is a gold mine. You'll know which schools are on the table and which are not.
- Every application takes a lot longer than you or your kid is expecting. Take NOTES on visits for the why us essay.
- Worry about ED strategy last. Get list first. Don't ED2 - that's a panic move and leads to a lot of regrets IME.
- Add paid work to your activities section. if your kid has no paid work, get babysitting now. Babysitting is a great EC to have. Anything that shows a kid who will work for $20 an hour. There are a large number of kids who won't and colleges dont need more of them on campus
- Our HOS was able to write letters in the waitlist round which were impactful. IF you get to this stage, have kid reach out to HOS directly as early as possible to see if this is an option.

if you want an outside counselor, I know two families at public school who hired someone for 6k starting in beginning of Junior year who were very happy. They review testing strategy, lists, reread essays. Sorry I dont know the name, they're not in NYC. If you want, just get someone for the essay. Don't pay more. Don't need to pay NYC prices either - the world if flat. This idea that "they won't know our school" is outdated.

My understanding is that the result is usually pretty good. These consultants can provide academic counseling but their main "value add" is "packaging" a student and making sure they stand out from the rest of applicants. I do know a few people who used this kind of support and as far as I know, they all got the outcome they wanted.

The minimal donation that allegedly gets a qualified candidate into HYP is $10mm+. $1-1.5mm is much less and may not be an issue for high net worth individuals.

The company I am thinking of has been in the press several times. Here is one of the examples:

https://nypost.com/2018/02/10/mom-agreed-to-give-consultant-1-5m-to-help-kids-college-admissions-suit/

The child in the article did get into an Ivy but I personally understand why the mother thought twice about paying such a ridiculous amount.

A college counselor I met with recently said that 10 million figure is now 40 million.
