Oh Mary is a very particular type of raunchy camp that might not be for everyone. I probably wouldn't recommend it to a mom and son who haven't seen a lot of theater.

I love Hadestown but I didn’t recc it for someone looking for a comedy. Agree if you want a sense of what it’s like you can listen to the album on spotify (it’s based on Greek
myth so I wouldn’t really worry about spoilers)

While I'd agree with most of what's been said, hard pass on Hadestown and Titanique. Hadestown is awful (I wanted to leave at intermission, unfortunately the rest of the family did not). Highly recommend you find some of the music ahead of time and see if you like any of it - I did not. Titanique is just dumb - you'll feel like you've wasted a lot of your money and time

Operation Mincemeat will start touring soon. I know it'll be in my area (Detroit) in January 2027, for example.

I'll be the voice of dissent. I saw it on Broadway last summer and absolutely hated it. One of the things that annoyed me so much, too, was that I was the one in my family who picked it. From the description it sounded like so much fun. I hated two of the main characters -- the main officer who took credit for everything and the dopey flailing guy. Yes, I have at least some basic familiarity with the conventions of British pantomime, so I had some idea in advance what I was getting into.

(There was one scene in the second act that I thought was staged brilliantly though. It involved strobe flashes and rapid changes of character.)

Also, I love musicals but I often struggle with hearing the lyrics or dialogue in lesser theaters due to poor miking or sound systems. One of the things I enjoy and have come to expect on Broadway is perfect sound. Until Operation Mincemeat. The miking/sound was awful and I struggled to make out the lyrics. I've seen this same complaint in numerous reviews of the Broadway production.

(Before anyone sasses me to get my hearing checked -- I have, and I actually have excellent hearing for my age.)

(Different) Catholic poster here, and while I’m fine with light spoofing of my own or other faiths I agree with you that Book of Mormon went too far and just felt like bullying/ was uncomfortable to watch. (For what it’s worth, the original version of the musical was perhaps equally offensive to Africans, though I hear they’ve since sanitized that part of the show because of complaints.)

On a lighter note and to get back to the OP’s question I’d also recommend Operation Mincemeat!

Chicago is a classic and the music is so good. If I had to see one musical in my lifetime is choose it. Took my 16 yo to see it and he liked both the movie and the musical.

If he likes Harry Potter, Cursed Child is actually a great show. Fun teen boy hijinks and jokes, amazing effects, and right now a phenomenal cast, especially Aidan Close.

NP - Book of Mormon was hilarious (self deprecating Catholic here who sends my seminarian friend memes about how many hosts you need to eat to make a full Jesus).

Operation Mincemeat sounds grand. thank you for the heads-up for our next trip. This forum is amazing.
