Equally true that private school is never worth it. You are paying to subsidize tuition for poor and middle-class students.Anonymous wrote:OOS public school is never worth it. You are paying to subsidize in-state tuition.

UMich and Cal are worth oos for Eng/CS, but not UNC or UVA. So, it depends on your major.

Anonymous wrote:In my opinion, if Engineering/Tech then UCB and UM are well worth it. You didn't mention Georgia Tech but the same applies there as well. Otherwise, probably not. I honestly can't think of any program at UNC worth paying out of state for.

Anybody have positive outcomes justifying these costs? Or just hardcore legacies or prestige chasing parents?

Is this about post-graduation salary? Class size? Reputation? Research opportunities? Personal attention? Happiness?
Both schools are “worth it” to us because they’re the schools our kids wanted to go to, where they thought they’d be happy and challenged.
Anonymous wrote:Worth it relative to a much cheaper in state option? No, not worth it. Worth it relative to full pay at privates? Depends on major.
The better question now is does any undergraduate degree make sense relative to ROI. Debatable.
