Moving isn’t off the table for a lot of families. UVA is simply an obsession because nothing else compares at the in-state price point.

Seriously. Applicants are compared with other students from their HS - for many many colleges. Big fish in smaller rural pond has the best odds for acceptance at many colleges.

Yeah, just do that, OP. I dare you.

My FCPS kid got in UChicago and SWAP but was rejected by UVA. All applied RD. College application is a myth.

You need a different and more open minded mentality.

One or two Bs are ok if the rest of the app is stellar.

From the last post we had about this: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1325662.page#32127603

The key to UVA is to do well (most As) in all five core classes all four years. Testing helps but they are truly test optional. Be in the top part of your class. After that bar is met, then they are holistic. So leadership, deep involvement in any ECs, and solid essays/recs. Seems ED helped this year due to the sheer volume that occured with no supplemental essays. Will be interesting to see if that remains the case.

all A's in all 5 core areas and all ap when avail

foreign language through ap.

leadership

sports

volunteering

GPA over 4.45

This is for a chance. Yes there are exceptions, but over the last 2 years I have seen many with this profile not get in.

Add long term ECs that have impact; local impact is fine. No need to cure cancer or bring peace the Middle East. Also, I believe leadership in those ECs move the needle; think assistant manager at their job, start and manage a mowing business, reffing local rec sports, coaching. All of these are doable ECs that kids can do without mommy or daddy’s connections.

Definitely ED. My kid has a friend who was UVA or bust but she didn't ED because she wanted to see where else she'd get in and she felt confident she'd get in EA. Nope.

Yeah, mine was accepted into Carnegie Mellon (and Michigan) but rejected at UVA, while lower stat kids with less activities were accepted at UVA.

This happens often.

Less activities? Maybe it was quality over quantity.

Let me guess: you're from California and are on a DMV thread.

OP SAID "FCPS." If you were from here you'd know she means in state.

Lighten Up Francis. Born and raised in the DMV. Were you? Are you truly from here?

Well learn to read then. She was clearly and specifically asking about admissions from Fairfax County Public Schools.

typical nasty DMV strivers - can't wait to relocate from area.

Yep..Pretty sure they are not from this area and are transplants to boot.

Bye.

I mean it was a stupid thing to do. If you're going to participate, at least read the post first. It was all of one sentence.
