My current sophomore is taking the June ACT. Also signed up for Sept and Dec ACT. Hoping he will be done by Sept but don’t want to risk not getting a seat at a nearby test center.

My kid took it August before junior year with minimal prep and scored in the high 1400s. I thought it was helpful to have a baseline relatively early so we had a sense of what lay ahead in terms of colleges he’d likely be a fit for. He took it in the spring of junior year with a bit more prep… and got the exact same score. He’ll be taking it again this summer and maybe the ACT too if he doesn't like the outcome but hoping we’re done after June.

NP do rising seniors take the SAT in August before their senior year to raise their score or is that very uncommon? DC already has great score but wants to take it again to get R/W score higher. Already got 800 in math.

What an arrogant way to ask for information. No wonder kids these days also behave the same..

Try: Need information about when to take the SAT

Is the elastic in your undies too tight today?

Why is junior year so awful? My sophomore already had APs in English, history, and, CS, math..junior year is pretty much more of that

Like you said, junior year is more intense than sophomore….

The reason some kids take it early is to "get it out of the way." There is no advantage to taking it early other than that. Many kids benefit from having additional time in their junior year math and English classes, even if those classes are "advanced." March of junior year is just fine for many kids to take it for the first time, leaving May or June or September for retakes if need be.

My dc took the SAT the weekend before the PSAT. The PSAT felt easy in comparison and had the benefit of one prep. dc was a NMSF.

Also, look at where they can take the SATS. Their first test was at a high school where they were in a room with no windows. Did much better when taking at their school.

So if PSAT falls sometime in Oct, is it better to take SAT just before, or just after PSAT? There are Sept, early oct, and early Nov dates for SAT this fall.

Like PP says, no downside to taking it in the summer cold.

Many schools offer it for free as a mock-test during Sophomore year as a baseline. Intended to be cold. It can help to guide the prep you intend to do later.

There ARE some schools that want all scores reported. But I think OP says their kid scores ok. So I'd recommend summer.

We did this and I do not recommend it.
