My kid got accepted with a 4.6 gpa, top 4% of his class. Took progressively more AP classes from sophomore year (1 AP), junior year (4), to senior year (6). Got straight A's at the midyear point senior year and graduating with straight As. Leadership roles in school, accepted to prestigious summer program, usual HS clubs. Submitted a 1470 SAT. From NoVA, PWCS.

He had a good score, but with UVA’s 25 percentile being 1410, didn’t seem worth the effort to get it up that high. Took advantage of test optional since his score didn’t help his application. Since he got into his top choice was a good strategy. If he really wanted to go to UVA maybe, maybe not. Unfortunately colleges don’t tell you why you didn’t get in.


If he didn’t even get a 1420, he didn’t have a “good score.”

1440/ 4.3 from FCPS. Regular smart kid, lots of extracurriculars but nothing unusual. Engineering. White female.

I know an athlete who got in ED.

4.0 weighted, 1200-ish SATs, successful at two sports.

SAT in the high 1400+
Plenty of school and community involvement.

And if you know you want it, just ED! It’s so nice to be done before Christmas.

I think the PP is correct about the top x% getting in. We were surprised my DC was accepted with typical ECs, 4.2W (4.4 at graduation), 35 ACT, 12 APs. All 5 core to the AP level. Math went to AP Calc AB and science AP was APES. However, looking at Scoir results now DC was definitely in the top 5-10% of the class .

It’s the same year in and year out. State school so must pull in kids from all over the state. Top 3-5% based on GPA and reasonable SAT/ACT if submitted. These kids must also demonstrate rigor in core subjects. May take one or two outside the range to fill a need as they shape the class.

Your kid is competing against their classmates that are applying to UVA, it is as simple as that and so fall inside the quota you get an acceptance.

I believe it’s 100% based on gpa.
Mine got all of these including Varsity captain, but was less than 4.4

I don't think you can know this without knowing who applied. Maybe they took half of the ten humanities majors but only a quarter of the hundred science majors.
