MoCo keeps increasing taxes rather than thinking about cutting the budget. And the kids are not doing any better year after year of giving MCPS more money.

So sick of this place.

This is funnier:

The ITOC is a $692 property tax credit for homeowners who claim their home as their principal residence. It used to be automatically applied to qualifying county property tax bills, but homeowners now have to fill out a one-time application to receive it.

Elrich has spoken out on multiple occasions against the proposed elimination of the ITOC, which he says will result in most homeowners paying more than they would under his proposal to raise the property tax rate.

Supporters of the proposed elimination of the ITOC emphasize that the credit does not benefit everyone, including people who qualify but may not be aware of it.

“Unfortunately, it doesn’t provide the credit equally to everyone,” Balcombe said on Friday. “Renters don’t get this credit, it is owner-occupied eligible only.”

Renters don't need the credit because they don't pay property taxes in the first place. Idiots.

Property taxes are paid from rental income, idiot

Renters don’t make rental income. Renters are the ones who have rent costs

+1. Rents have nothing to do with property taxes. Some buildings in the county pay nothing in property in taxes. These same buildings have some of the highest rents in the county. Even if there were a connection between rents and property taxes, the market is so soft right now that landlords wouldn’t be able to pass along the cost of a tax increase.

It is always a taxation problem, never a spending problem. $150,000 isn’t even a lot of money in 2026. They are raising taxes on the middle class. Taxes keep going up, but incomes don't. Maybe the county govt needs to learn to live within its means like all of its residents. Cut jobs, freeze pay increases for the next 5 years, cut pensions, cut benefits and force employees to pay more for their own healthcare. You know, the same crap 99% of Americans face who have jobs outside of the county govt.

The council president has a full property tax credit so she will get a net decrease from the tax package that she proposed.

What kind of imbecile thinks renters should get a homeowner tax credit when they don't own the home?

I care. I have to pay for outside tutoring and therapies for my kids as Mcps is a nightmare so that 300 is much better spent on them than more funding for Mcps whose aready cutting staff and other things for next year.

+1000. Homeschooled a year. Then, moved to Frederick for same reason. Vote with feet

Property taxes have nothing to do with what rent costs. Rents are set by the market irrespective of costs.

Recent empirical work finds that property tax shocks are passed through to renters to a meaningful extent, especially for new leases and in markets where landlords have pricing power. One study found pass-through of about 50 to 89 cents per $1 of property tax shock for new tenants in Berkeley.

You and Bethesda Magazine don't understand tax brackets.

Filers reporting $150,001 to $900,000 in taxable income will pay less income taxes in Tax
Year 2027 when compared to the flat 3.2% tax rate in Tax Year 2026.

The tax break will
be reduced to $0 at $900,000 of taxable income

https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/news/montgomery-update-homeowners-could-pay-higher-taxes-under-new-council-plan-eliminate-tax-credit-fewer-families-experiencing-homelessness-public-safety-progress-silver-spring

I opened that link and searched for those key words, and I didn't see anything that stated the bolded. Can you point me to the section and key words?

Also, that link is from Elrich from May 1. The Bethesda article is the County Council's proposal from May 8. They are not the same.

Yes and it is a progressive tax. The tax rate is decreasing for others with lower income. This 0.1 % increase will apply to me and I am fine with it if others get a bit more of a break.

OP is misinformed. The income tax is not a problem. The ITOC property tax credit is

o Filers that report less than $135,500 in taxable income and previously received the ITOC
will pay more in aggregate income and property taxes
when compared to FY26.

The
aggregate change is $0 at taxable income of $135,500.

o Filers that report $135,500 to $208,000 will pay less in aggregate income and property
taxes when compared to FY26. The maximum benefit is $58 less in aggregate taxes at
taxable income of $150,000.

o Filers that report more than $208,000 will pay more in aggregate income and property
taxes
when compared to FY26

where is this from?

+1. We make $300K, so this is $300. In Arlington county right now, they are getting increases well above this amount just for their cars alone, not to mention the increases they're also facing in property taxes.

Yes, the Arlington County Board is absolutely awful and perhaps unparalleled in how they squander taxpayers money. They just recently voted to increase taxes by more than even our county manager asked for. Passed 4-1. They should all be ashamed. For all those people saying we voted for it: there is no one else on the ballot. The primary candidates are all the same with the same agendas, and whoever runs in the end; they are all the same, and sometimes run unopposed. I can only hope that with the new tax bills coming, more people will say “enough” and we can get them out!
